One Piece: Oda Finally Confirms The Secret Behind Blackbeard’s Special Body

This article contains spoilers from One Piece‘s Elbaf Arc.

For a long time, fans of *One Piece* have been puzzled by how Blackbeard managed to consume two Devil Fruits. It’s incredibly rare and powerful – even the strongest pirates shouldn’t be able to do it – but he has. The only explanation given so far was that his body is unique. This seemed strange, but it now appears to be linked to his family history, specifically the Buccaneer bloodline.

The Buccaneer race is a major focus in the world of *One Piece*, especially after a recent reveal in chapter 1160. Fans already knew they committed serious offenses against the World Government during the Void Century, leading to their near-total erasure from history. Only a handful of Buccaneers were known to have survived, like Kuma and his father. Now, the author has confirmed that Blackbeard is very likely also a member of this race, which could explain his unique ability to wield two Devil Fruits.

Blackbeard Has The Body Of A Buccaneer

Buccaneers Have Giants Blood In Them

  • The Buccaneers also have a special power
  • They Are Connected To Nika

Chapter 1160 of *One Piece* revealed a lot about the Buccaneers, a group previously known to fans mostly through Kuma. Before this, almost nothing was known about the other Buccaneers who were still alive in the world of *One Piece*.

Eiichiro Oda has revealed that the Davy Clan might be related to the Buccaneers, suggesting everyone in the ‘Davy D.’ family carries Buccaneer ancestry. This raises the possibility that Rocks and Marshall D. Teach also have Buccaneer blood, with Teach seemingly inheriting a strong dose of it, possibly from his mother.

After years of speculation about what made Blackbeard unique, it’s now been revealed that he was part of the Buccaneer race. This has led fans to ask what makes Buccaneers special. So far, it’s known they possess great strength, durability, and endurance, but details about other abilities remain a mystery.

His body…it’s special. Maybe that’s why he can eat two fruits. — Marco

Marco confirmed that Blackbeard’s body is unique. Vegapunk hinted on Egghead that Blackbeard possesses a special ability, and this power is probably what lets him consume more than one Devil Fruit.

Being a Buccaneer Could Be Why Blackbeard Has Two Devil Fruits

The Buccaneers Still Hold Many Secrets

It seems Blackbeard can eat multiple Devil Fruits because of his unique Buccaneer ability. We’ve seen similar things happen with other characters: Kuma, even without free will, was still able to function, and the Iron Giant appeared to be alive despite being made of scrap metal, powered by willpower. This suggests the Buccaneer’s power lets someone transfer souls and willpower into another body, essentially allowing them to live on through it.

Essentially, Kuma could continue living while transferring his consciousness to the Pacifista, even after losing his own free will. Similarly, the Iron Giant contained the memories of a pirate from the Void Century, which is why it reactivated when it sensed Joy Boy’s heartbeat.

Teach probably contains the spirits and determination of both Rocks and Davy Jones within him. This means, because he has multiple souls as a pirate, he’s able to consume more than one Devil Fruit.

I’m so excited, the next chapter of One Piece is coming out this week! It’ll be released on Sunday as usual. For those in Japan, it drops at midnight on Monday. The official date is September 14, 2025, and the best part is, you can read it for free on Manga Plus! I can’t wait!
