Minecraft is a remarkably creative game that lets players build and explore worlds however they like. Whether you play the Bedrock Edition or use mods with the Java Edition, there’s almost limitless fun to be found.
If you’re starting a new Survival game in Minecraft, defeating the Ender Dragon is often the first big goal. Finding the End Portal to get there might seem easy, but it can be tricky if you don’t know the right steps. This guide will help you locate the End Portal quickly.
Step #1: Craft the Eye of Ender
Okay, so before you even *think* about heading to the End, you absolutely have to make a bunch of Eyes of Ender. Seriously, you need these for two things: first, to actually *open* the End Portal, and second, to locate the Stronghold where the Portal is hidden! Each Eye of Ender is pretty simple to make, you just need a few things…
- 1x Ender Pearl: Dropped from eliminated Endermen
- 1x Blaze Powder: Crafted from a Blaze Rod dropped from Blazes in the Nether. Blazes spawn in Nether Fortresses found along the X-axis.
You’ll need at least 12 Eyes of Ender to activate the End Portal. We suggest making a few extra, though, because you might lose some while searching for the Stronghold.
Step #2: Use the Eyes of Ender to Find the Stronghold
Once you’ve made several Eyes of Ender, you can use them to find the Stronghold. To do this, use the item (right-click on a computer, or press LT/L2 on a controller). The Eye of Ender will then travel in the direction of the closest Stronghold. Be aware that each time you throw an Eye of Ender, there’s a 20% chance it will break and an 80% chance it will just fall to the ground. That’s why it’s good to make extra, and to use them carefully so you don’t run out!
Keep throwing Eyes of Ender and following where they lead until they stop moving forward – you might even have to walk back a little if you’ve gone too far. Once they stop, gain some height and throw another Eye of Ender to pinpoint the Stronghold’s location underground. Remember where it points, as that’s where you’ll find the entrance.
Step #3: Enter the Stronghold & Locate the End Portal
You’re now positioned directly over the Stronghold, and you’ll need to dig downwards to reach it. It’s best not to dig straight down, though, because you could fall into lava or take damage from a long fall. A safer method is to stand between two blocks and break them both as you dig down. This gives you a bit of a safety net if you happen to run into lava or an unexpected cave.
You’ll eventually find a building made of Stone Bricks – that’s the Stronghold. Once inside, you need to find the End Portal Room, which can be difficult depending on where you enter. To help with your search, carefully explore each path and use torches to mark where you’ve already been, so you don’t get lost.
To help find the End Portal, turn up your game’s volume and listen for the distinct sounds of Silverfish, which spawn nearby. Once you locate the portal, simply place Eyes of Ender into the empty spaces to activate it and open the path to the End.
