In simpler terms, each god in “Age of Mythology” has its own distinct way of being played, making it worthwhile to experiment with them all to discover which one matches a player’s preference best. The game maintains a remarkable balance, allowing any god to be effective and enjoyable with enough investment. However, some gods are more popular than others due to their initial impact on gameplay. While the Major Gods often get the most attention for significantly shaping one’s strategy from the beginning, it is essential not to overlook the merits of the lesser-known Minor Gods.

As a gamer, I can tell you that when I join this game, not only do I get to control the mighty Zeus as my major god, but I also get the privilege of wielding the formidable Medusa. The cherry on top is the passive bonus of +25% for all myth units under my command. This advantage makes most players, including myself, opt for Zeus over other gods. With an army of powerful myth units at my disposal, I can confidently stride through most of my opponents.
15 Shennong

Tale of the Dragon” expansion pack isn’t the strongest addition to this fantastic game. However, I enjoyed exploring a new civilization and being part of an innovative Chinese mythology-inspired storyline. Here’s hoping that “Age of Mythology: Retold” will strike a better balance between gameplay and storytelling for more players to enjoy.
In the realm of mythology within Age of Mythology, Shennong is among the significant gods for those opting to represent the Chinese civilization. Monk units in this game are an enjoyable experience, reminiscent of their utilization in Age of Empires. Consequently, it’s a delight to utilize Shennong’s inherent abilities to fortify Monks and streamline resource collection processes.

However, amassing sufficient resources to construct a sizable army may take longer than desired for many players. Moreover, the primary method of earning Favor with this civilization is by participating in frequent battles. While this strategy can be effective, it can also put a significant strain on a player’s economy as they consistently need to replace lost units.
Although expert players may make it seem effortless as they command the Norse civilization, utilizing its advantages to the maximum. For instance, Thor proves beneficial in this aspect. His Dwarven Mine quickly provides players with gold and reduces the cost of armory upgrades a bit as well.
12 Loki
Civilization: Norse

In “Age of Mythology,” Loki is among the three Norse gods. For those aiming to construct a formidable Hersir army, Loki’s benefits are an attractive addition.
The Hersir with great power not only run a bit swifter, but they can unexpectedly bring forth Myth Units following prolonged battles. This feature proves advantageous for players who skillfully utilize their troops. Additionally, producing Myth Units comes at a more affordable cost. Considering the high expense of these powerful entities, this cost reduction is quite beneficial.
11 Poseidon
Civilization: Greek
- God Power: Lure
In simpler terms, exploring the Greek Civilization in Age of Mythology is akin to playing an easy-mode Age of Empires game. Newcomers to Age of Mythology will find this civilization more welcoming due to its user-friendly features. Additionally, the presence of three distinctive Greek gods, each with exclusive units and abilities, adds enjoyment to gameplay.
As someone who has spent countless hours delving into the world of Greek mythology and strategy games, I must admit that I have a soft spot for Poseidon, the god of the sea. However, I can’t deny that there are moments when I feel frustrated with his limitations.
10 Isis

Isis excels in the later stages of the game due to her potent attacks and synergy with the deity Hathor, granting players effective units and enhancements. Additionally, Isis offers advantages such as reducing technology costs by 10%, increasing Town Center population, and shielding monuments from divine powers. These benefits, in conjunction with her Prosperity god power that temporarily boosts gold collection, enable Isis to build a robust economy.
Despite the challenges she faces on various battlefields, Isis can be an unpredictable choice. Her early game performance lags behind other deities, making it tough for her to compete effectively. Consequently, Isis is considered a niche goddess with inconsistent results, but skilled players can make her a formidable force.
9 Kronos
Civilization: Atlantean

As a gamer, I’ve come across many civilizations in my time, but none quite as frustrating as Kronos during the initial stages of a game. While some may underestimate this ancient civilization, they overlook its unique and vexing playstyle. Instead of engaging in direct combat or focusing on expansion, Kronas chooses to employ Oracles and Greek Scout Units for harassment. These units relentlessly target enemy resource production sites, causing significant damage and, at times, crippling opponents entirely. With Kronos’ exclusive access to technology that enhances the abilities of Oracles, this strategy can prove particularly effective.
Although this method primarily depends on enemies committing errors, Kronos exhibits some inconsistency. Nevertheless, Kronos remains an engaging choice due to distinctive features such as shifting building times at will, enabling unconventional gameplay styles.
8 Odin
Civilization: Norse
- God Power: Great Hunt
Odin is able to put forward a particularly impressive army composition, as he has access to a number of powerful units and buffs focused on improving these units. For example, Huskarls, Ballistae, and Portable Rams have 20% more health, and Jarls have 10% more. Additionally, all human soldiers gradually regenerate their health, meaning that Odin allows players to create a very strong army.
Although Odin’s divine abilities aren’t as strong as some other deities, making him vulnerable to destruction-wielding gods. Yet, Odin remains an excellent pick due to his robust units.
7 Hades
Civilization: Greek

Hades is less commonly used in games due to his specific role, and players controlling Hades frequently find themselves on the defensive, particularly on maps where he’s not as effective. However, his buildings receive notable strength boosts in health and attack power. It can be challenging for Hades players to capitalize on opponents’ errors during the initial phase of the game.
In the later stages, Hades becomes more formidable due to his capability to construct advanced buildings that enhance gold generation. Furthermore, Hades’ mythic archer unit, Gastraphetes, becomes a significant asset with impressive damage capabilities. This advantage is amplified even further by the 10% bonus damage for archers that Hades can utilize.
6 Nu Wa
Civilization: Chinese
- God Power: Recreation
In the later stages of the game, Nu Wa boasts an impressive army with robust cavalry and the formidable White Tiger mythical unit. Additionally, Nu Wa benefits from enhanced Favor generation through Gardens, while human units come at a reduced cost of 10%, facilitating more effective economic management.
While it’s true that Nu Wa may face challenges on various maps, particularly those with a water theme, her weaknesses make her an unattractive choice in numerous situations. Yet, when the map suits her strengths, Nu Wa can become an excellent option and thrive in late-game confrontations against even the mightiest gods in Age of Mythology.
5 Ra
Civilization: Egypt
- God Power: Rain
Ra is a dependable choice on many maps and offers substantial advantages for priests and laborers. While he’s not weak in the initial stages, there are instances where other gods may surpass him. However, as the game progresses into late stages, Ra shines with his immense benefits to strong Pharaohs and affordable monument construction.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that just like Hades, Ra gains immense power in the later stages of the game due to a robust economy. Going up against gods who excel early on, such as Fu Xi, requires me to employ a strategic approach. Delaying my attacks and focusing on resource management is key, making Ra’s playstyle a challenging yet rewarding experience when executed correctly.
4 Oranos
Civilization: Atlantean
- God Power: Shockwave
In simpler terms, Oranos is an approachable deity for beginners due to his reliability and versatility across various maps. His skills offer ample flexibility, allowing players some leeway and making the game more forgiving. With quick-moving units, efficient Favor production, and superior houses, Oranos provides a solid foundation for newcomers.
Oranos also has access to the unique Sky Passages building, an excellent tactical option that allows instant transportation of units wherever they’re built. This means that it is easy to respond to enemy attacks with a decent network of Sky Passages, of which 10 can be built in total.
3 Set
Civilization: Egypt
- God Power: Vision
Set may not be an easy character to master, but the rewards can be significant as he has immense power. Set’s distinct feature is his ability to transform wild animals into priests, giving players command over these creatures. These animals become valuable assets during battles, especially when enhanced with Feral technology.
Among all gods in the game, Set stands out as the strongest when it comes to reconnaissance and data collection. Hyenas and priests are particularly proficient at carrying out these tasks for him. Additionally, his god power, Vision, grants him a significant view of the map momentarily.
2 Zeus
Civilization: Greek
- God Power: Bolt
As a dedicated gamer, I can tell you that Zeus, in my experience, is a god of remarkable versatility and superiority over other Greek deities, mainly due to their more specialized niches. In simpler terms, Zeus brings an impressive Favor boost for players. This bonus not only doubles the maximum Favor limit but also accelerates the production rate of Favor when citizens pay homage at Temples. Additionally, under the mighty influence of Zeus, infantry units become significantly stronger. Their damage against buildings is increased twofold, while Hoplites experience a welcome improvement in movement speed.
On water-themed maps, Zeus holds a strong reign with few deities able to challenge his consistent victory. The might of Zeus’s divine ability, Bolt, further strengthens his position by effectively neutralizing many opponent champions.
1 Fu Xi
Civilization: Chinese
- God Power: Year of the Goat
Fu Xi ranks at the top as an versatile champion, boasting a powerful early game that can conclude matches before opponents have fully developed. Notably, Fu Xi brings along several significant economic advantages, such as reducing building costs by 20%, making unit upgrades more affordable, and introducing the unique Domestication technology to enhance the collection of various food resources.
Fu Xi, the Chinese god, holds a unique advantage – he can train all eight Immortals heroes from the game’s start, while other deities are limited to two per age. Although other gods may overtake Fu Xi in the late stages, his early-game strength is undeniable and poses a significant challenge for opponents.
