One Piece: Oda Has Already Confirmed The Successor Of The Pirate King, And It Isn’t Luffy

This article contains spoilers for One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.

Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, is considered one of the most powerful people to ever live in the world of One Piece. Many fans believe he was the strongest pirate of the last century, rivaled only by someone like Rocks. Unlike Rocks, who disappeared from history, Roger left a lasting legacy, ensuring he’d never be forgotten. He’s known throughout the world as the greatest pirate who ever lived – the one who conquered all the seas.

As we know, Roger has passed away, and the title of Pirate King is currently unclaimed. However, someone has gained all of his abilities. Although many assume it’s Luffy, it’s actually a different character entirely.

Pirate King Roger Possessed Immense Power

  • Roger Was The Strongest Of His Era
  • Whitebeard Was His Equal

Before the Golden Age of Pirates, Gol D. Roger was already known as one of the strongest pirates ever. While he wasn’t immediately as powerful as figures like Rocks D. Xebec when he started, Roger steadily grew stronger until he rivaled them. Their battle at God Valley showed they were equals, and Roger continued to surpass even that level. After Rocks’ defeat, the era became known as the Age of Roger, solidifying his reputation as the most powerful and impactful pirate of his time.

Roger was incredibly powerful, rivaled only by legends like Whitebeard and Garp. What made him unique was that he achieved this level of strength purely through mastery of Haki, making his Haki the most formidable of his era. He even adopted the fighting style of Rocks D. Xebec, a notorious pirate known for his overwhelmingly destructive attacks – using his sword with the force of a cannon or hammer.

After Roger’s death, a void was left in the pirate world, but it wasn’t long before Red-haired Shanks rose to prominence. He quickly became known as one of the most powerful pirates of all time, and now possesses a level of strength comparable to the original Roger.

Shanks Inherited The Power Of The Pirate King

Shanks Commands The Same Powers As Roger

While Shanks isn’t likely to be Joy Boy, that doesn’t diminish his status – he’s arguably just as powerful as Roger. In some ways, Shanks is even *more* connected to Roger than Luffy is. He was essentially seen as Roger’s protégé, and everyone in Roger’s crew, including Buggy, considered him a serious contender to take over as Pirate King.

As a child, I dreamed of creating a manga with an incredibly exciting climax. I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off! Now, after 25 years, we’re nearing the end of the Wano arc and everything is almost ready. You can jump into the story here if you like, because from this point on… it’s going to be the culmination of everything – the ONE PIECE! I’m going to reveal all the secrets of this world in the pages to come, and it’s going to be a wild ride! Buckle up and please stick with me a little longer! – Eiichiro Oda, Author of One Piece, 2022

Beyond that, Shanks fights remarkably like Roger. Neither relied on Devil Fruit powers, and like Roger, Shanks wields his sword with incredible force, essentially using it as a bludgeon. Instead of cutting, Shanks’s sword creates powerful blasts, similar to how both Roger and Rocks fought. While Luffy is destined to exceed Shanks and become Pirate King, Shanks is the one who carries on Roger’s strength and fighting style.
