Recently, during an interview with IGN, I learned that neither Microsoft nor Mojang are considering making Minecraft a free-to-play game. As a dedicated gamer, it’s good to know that we can continue enjoying this amazing game without any changes in its business model.
“Yeah, it doesn’t really work with the way we built it,” she said when posed with the question.
Garneij explained, “We developed the game with a different goal in mind, which means monetization isn’t applicable in the same way for us. The game is purchased initially and then there’s no further cost. For us, it’s crucial that our game reaches as many people as possible. I believe this accessibility is one of our fundamental values, making it a truly exceptional offer.

Initially, Minecraft was introduced on PCs back in May 2009, with the complete 1.0 version following suit in November 2011. The game made its console debut in May 2012 when it became available for Xbox 360, and now it can be found across all major gaming platforms.
Ever since its debut, this game has racked up over 300 million sales globally, placing it among the most popular video games ever created. In 2014, both the game and its developer Mojang were acquired by Microsoft for a whopping $2.5 billion.
