As a big fan of Xbox Cloud Gaming, I’m really excited to hear reports that they might be launching a free version with ads soon! It sounds like it’ll be a beta test at first. The good news is Xbox Cloud Gaming will *still* be included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. But this free tier? Apparently, it’ll be limited to about five hours of playtime a month, and you’ll see a short ad before you start playing. Still, free gaming is free gaming, right? Simply put, Xbox Cloud Gaming is a benefit included with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership. This lets you stream select games to your devices, with the game itself running on powerful servers. You can also use Xbox Cloud Gaming to play games you own through your Microsoft account on devices that support it. For the best experience, a reliable cable or fiber internet connection is recommended. Currently, Xbox Cloud Gaming has officially launched and is no longer in beta.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Could Get A Free, Ad-Supported Tier
Microsoft is planning to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to a wider audience, even though it will start with a limited rollout. According to The Verge, they’re testing a free version of the service that will include advertisements. This will let people play certain games without needing an Xbox Game Pass subscription, as well as games connected to their Microsoft account and those available during Free Play Days. When you start a game stream, you’ll see about two minutes of ads beforehand, and each gaming session will be limited to one hour. The ad-supported tier of Xbox Cloud Gaming will also have a monthly playtime cap of five hours, but these limits might change while the free version is still in beta.

It’s going to be available on my Windows PC, Xbox consoles, phones, and even through web browsers – that’s awesome. However, the timing feels a little weird. Just recently, on October 1st, Xbox Game Pass announced some pretty big price hikes. They also changed the names of the older tiers – Core is now Essential, and Standard is now Premium. The biggest change? Xbox Game Pass Ultimate – the one that includes Xbox Cloud Gaming – jumped from $19.99 a month to a hefty $29.99. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, honestly.
The recent price adjustments for Xbox Game Pass led a lot of subscribers to cancel their memberships as a form of protest. It’s still unclear whether the new free Xbox Cloud Gaming option will be successful in keeping players subscribed.
