The main character is Atsu, but instead of facing a massive Mongol invasion like in the previous game, Ghost of Yotei focuses on a smaller, more focused threat: a group known as the Yotei Six.

The story begins with the Yotei Six, as they are the reason Atsu feels so much anger. Sixteen years before the events of Ghost of Yotei, the Yotei Six murdered Atsu’s family. They assumed she had also died, but obviously, she survived. The main antagonists of Ghost of Yotei are a powerful and dangerous organization, and they might even be more threatening than the well-known O’Driscoll Boys.

A More Organized and Effective Gang

A key trait of the O’Driscoll Boys is that their leader, Colm O’Driscoll, prioritizes having many members over having skilled ones. He accepts almost anyone into the gang, which brings in a lot of dangerous criminals and troublemakers. Colm doesn’t care much about the lives of his followers, but he exploits their large numbers to commit robberies and murders, ultimately increasing his own power and growing his reputation.

The Yotei Six are very different. While they’ve grown since the murder of Atsu’s family, their expansion has been much more calculated. Unlike Colm, who doesn’t mind losing members, Lord Saito, the founder of the Yotei Six, values his inner circle, though he still treats them as tools rather than genuine allies. As you explore Ezo as Atsu, you’ll soon see who supports the Yotei Six and who doesn’t, demonstrating the significant influence the gang has gained.

Besides Lord Saito, the other members of the Yotei Six are known as the Spider, the Oni, the Dragon, the Snake, and the Kitsune.

From the beginning of Ghost of Yotei, it’s obvious the Yotei Six are just as brutal as the O’Driscoll Boys-they’ll even harm women and children. However, what really sets them apart is their intelligence and careful planning. This organized approach suggests they’ll likely survive longer, unlike Colm, whose quick, reckless violence ultimately leads to his downfall.

Following Colm’s death in Red Dead Redemption 2, the O’Driscoll Boys are in a precarious situation, and Arthur can assist Sadie in eliminating the last of them to get revenge for her husband.

The Yotei Six Are Now Part of Gaming Villain History

Creating a truly captivating villain is difficult, and developing six of them is even harder. Colm O’Driscoll was a compelling character, but he doesn’t quite reach his potential when measured against the primary villain, Micah Bell. Lord Saito, however, is a strong and fitting leader of the Yotei Six, and his skill in growing and strengthening the group’s network is both frightening and admirable. The Yotei Six benefit greatly from his leadership.

Besides the Yotei Six, Ghost of Yotei is a strong choice for players who enjoyed Red Dead Redemption 2 and are searching for a new, story-focused game with a large world to explore. While Ghost of Yotei isn’t quite as long, it still offers many of the same satisfying gameplay elements. The game excels at delivering both moving stories and intense action, though it might not have been as impactful without a formidable group like the Yotei Six.
