Sony Teases PlayStation 6 Release Window

Mark Cerny, the lead architect behind PlayStation consoles, has suggested the PlayStation 6 could be released “in a few years.” This has led fans to speculate that the new console might not arrive as soon as some expected.

The PlayStation 5, launched in 2020, has been the best-selling console of its generation, significantly surpassing the Xbox Series X/S in sales. Sony recently announced that over 80.3 million PS5 units have been sold, with sales continuing to rise. Although a more powerful version, the PlayStation 5 Pro, came out in 2024, players are now looking forward to the release of the PS6.

PlayStation 6 Release Window

  • The PS6 could be released in “a few years’ time,” which may indicate a 2028 release.

A recent video on the official PlayStation YouTube channel featured Mark Cerny, discussing how Sony’s partnership with AMD will improve graphics. Cerny mentioned he’s looking forward to bringing these technologies to a future console “in a few years,” which has led many to believe the PlayStation 6 could launch in late 2028. This timeline seems plausible, as Cerny has previously suggested the PS6 isn’t coming out anytime soon, and he likely wouldn’t mention a timeframe of “a few years” if a 2026 or early 2027 release was planned.

This news will probably disappoint fans who were hoping the PlayStation 6 would come out in 2027. While a 2027 release isn’t out of the question, it now seems less likely based on recent comments from Mark Cerny, who suggests the project is still quite a ways from being completed.

Details about Sony’s next PlayStation console are still scarce, but rumors have been circulating more and more recently. Leaked information earlier this year suggested the PlayStation 6 could have between 40 and 48 RDNA 5 processing units, potentially reaching speeds of 3 gigahertz or higher. The console is also expected to feature a significantly upgraded CPU with eight Zen 6 or newer cores, a substantial improvement over the current PS5. However, it’s important to remember that these are just unconfirmed reports.
