This article contains spoilers for One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
The final arc of *One Piece* has revealed many incredibly strong characters, and the story now largely focuses on the world’s most powerful individuals. We’re seeing the Yonko, the Revolutionary Army, the Holy Knights, and the Navy’s top officers play bigger roles than ever before.
Viewers are already aware of how powerful certain characters are, but there’s more to it. The author, Oda, has also revealed details about the Void Century and its inhabitants, leading many to believe that a select few pirates in the *One Piece* world truly deserve to be called gods – and at least two of them lived during the Void Century.
Pirates First Came Into Existence In The Void Century
- Joy Boy Was The First Pirate
- He Was The Sun God
Many One Piece fans already believed Joy Boy was the very first pirate, and this was officially confirmed by the author, Oda, during the Egghead arc. Through a message from Vegapunk, we learned Joy Boy originated from the Ancient Kingdom, a civilization completely erased from history. This kingdom was defeated by a group known as the 20 Kings, who then formed the current World Government.
He was the first to set out to sea. The first to be called a pirate! — Vegapunk on Joy Boy
Vegapunk revealed that Joy Boy was born in this prosperous kingdom and, remarkably, he was the first person to ever sail across the oceans. This makes him the original pirate, meaning piracy itself began during this time. It’s safe to assume that alongside Joy Boy, other pirates existed in the world of *One Piece*.
Joy Boy Was God Level
Honestly, Joy Boy was seriously powerful – everyone knows it! He was the second person ever known to have the power of Nika, just like Luffy. He actually *ate* the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which basically turned him into the Sun God Nika himself! It’s said his power was so immense, even Imu felt threatened by his Haki. It’s incredible to think about!
Listen, I have a secret name. It’s Davy D. Xebec! — Rocks to Harald
Davy Jones Was Likely Just As Strong
Similar to Joy Boy, Davy Jones lived during the Void Century. In chapter 1155 of *One Piece*, Rocks D. Xebec encountered Davy Jones and revealed he was one of Jones’ followers. According to Robin, Davy Jones was an ancient pirate who was cursed, and the source of that curse is Imu. Rocks specifically mentioning Davy Jones to Imu strongly suggests a connection between them. The fact that someone as powerful as Rocks was so influenced by Davy Jones implies Jones was incredibly strong – a rival on equal footing with figures like Luffy and Blackbeard. Essentially, just like Joy Boy, Davy Jones was a pirate of god-like status.
I’m looking forward to One Piece Chapter 1162, which is coming out this week! It typically releases on Sundays, but because of the time difference, it’s Monday at midnight Japan Standard Time. For most of us around the world, though, it’ll be available on October 12th, 2025. The good news is you can read it for free on Manga Plus when it’s released.
