Dissidia Final Fantasy Is Coming Back, But There’s A Catch

Okay, so huge news for Dissidia fans like me! Square Enix just announced they’re making a new Dissidia Final Fantasy game! They’re dropping more info on October 14th, which I’m already marking on my calendar. The catch? It’s currently only confirmed for iOS and Android. They haven’t said anything about bringing it to PlayStation or other platforms yet, so fingers crossed!

The *Dissidia Final Fantasy* series started in 2008 with a fighting game for the PSP, bringing iconic heroes and villains from the *Final Fantasy* universe together in 3D battles. An improved version, *Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy*, followed in 2011, adding characters like Tifa Lockhart (*Final Fantasy 7*) and Vaan (*Final Fantasy 12*). While the original PSP games are now considered classics by many, the later reboot, *Dissidia Final Fantasy NT*, wasn’t as well-received. Most recently, the mobile game *Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia* ended service in 2024.

A New Dissidia Final Fantasy Is Coming to Mobile Devices

Even with recent challenges, *Dissidia Final Fantasy* is making a comeback as a fighting game, planned for release on Android and iOS, though a specific date hasn’t been announced. This new *Dissidia Final Fantasy* game will be a “team boss battle arena,” but Square Enix hasn’t shared details about how it will be priced or what kind of devices it will run on. Early images showed locations based on Tokyo, Japan, like a radio tower, cafe, and park, and clicking around revealed even more. These extra pictures included things like three Moogle toys in a claw machine, a motorcycle inspired by the Hardy Daytona from *Final Fantasy 7*, and a shopping bag labeled Artemis.

Square Enix announced details about the next *Dissidia* game will be shared in a YouTube Premiere on Tuesday, October 14th, at 6:00 AM Eastern Time. They also hinted at the game’s possible characters by showing ten silhouettes. While fans easily recognized characters like Cloud Strife from *Final Fantasy 7* and Lightning from *Final Fantasy 13* thanks to their signature hairstyles, the other characters remain unknown.

Because games like *Dissidia Final Fantasy NT* and *Opera Omnia* have introduced characters from across the *Final Fantasy* universe – including Ramza Beoulve from *Final Fantasy Tactics* – the next *Dissidia* game has a lot of potential for a diverse cast. It’s still unclear how many characters from the *Final Fantasy* series the upcoming mobile game will actually include.
