More large retailers in the US are now reportedly stopping sales of the Xbox. This suggests continuing difficulties for Microsoft’s Xbox hardware team.
In late September 2025, Costco removed all Xbox products from its website and sharply discounted remaining Microsoft consoles in its stores. This clearance sale wasn’t limited to the U.S.; customers also reported it happening in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and other countries worldwide.
Walmart and Target Reportedly Pulling Xbox Consoles
Several major retailers now appear to be following Sam’s Club and Costco’s lead in reducing their Xbox offerings. Reports from Reddit users claiming to be Target employees suggest that some Target stores began removing Xbox displays the week of October 6th. A Walmart employee on Reddit also stated their store plans to eliminate the entire Xbox section during an upcoming remodel. These reports surfaced shortly after Sam’s Club started clearing out Xbox consoles, and within a month of Costco doing the same.
While Walmart and Target haven’t officially announced they’re removing Xbox products from all stores, it appears likely. This follows Costco’s confirmation that their recent Xbox clearance sale was a final decision and won’t be repeated.
Microsoft Insists It Isn’t Giving Up on Xbox Consoles
Despite reports to the contrary, Microsoft maintains it’s still committed to Xbox consoles. A company spokesperson recently confirmed, on October 5th, that they are continuing to invest in Xbox hardware through late 2025, strongly suggesting a new generation of Xbox is in development and will likely be released in the future.
It’s still unclear what Microsoft’s next Xbox consoles will be like. With Xbox sales falling, the brand losing popularity, and prices increasing due to tariffs (most recently on October 3rd, bringing the 2TB Xbox Series X to $800), Microsoft might design its next consoles to be more similar to PCs. This could involve using a single software development kit (SDK) for both, making it easier for game developers to release games on both Xbox and PC without significant extra work – essentially treating Xbox games as PC games designed for specific hardware. Industry predictions currently suggest the next generation of consoles will arrive in late 2027.
