This article contains spoilers from My Hero Academia.
My Hero Academia stands out among other action series because its author isn’t afraid to explore romantic relationships, and generally handles them well. While the story mainly focuses on heroes rescuing people and battling villains, it’s natural that a show centered around students would include romance – it adds to the realism. Creator Kohei Horikoshi understood this and intentionally included romantic elements from the start.
The author of *My Hero Academia*, Kohei Horikoshi, has finally confirmed the series’ most popular couple: Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka. Fans have been hoping to see them together for years, and Horikoshi hinted at their relationship multiple times. He made it official in chapter 431. While the series features other potential couples, this pairing is now considered canon, and has generated a lot of excitement among fans.
Izuku Midoriya And Ochaco Uraraka Are Officially A Canon Couple
Deku Ends Up with Ochaco

- The author dedicated a one-shot extra chapter to them
- Other ships were crushed
Towards the end of *My Hero Academia*, after the big battle concluded, Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka had a heartfelt conversation where they shared their feelings. However, many fans were hoping for a different outcome from this scene.
I would like to spend more time with you! — Izuku Midoriya to Ochaco Uraraka
They became friends and supported each other, but that was the extent of their connection. Fortunately, the series creator, Kohei Horikoshi, decided to take things further and gave fans another surprising twist in the relationship between Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka.

In chapter 431 of *My Hero Academia*, a bonus chapter included with the final volume, Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka shared a significant moment. Izuku confessed that Ochaco was particularly important to him and expressed his desire to take their relationship further, which she happily reciprocated. The author portrayed their connection beautifully, effectively confirming them as the series’ main romantic pairing. Here’s what the author, Horikoshi, had to say about it:
Horikoshi explained he didn’t want to focus on romance in the story, but rather highlight the different ways Ochako and Toga viewed love. He intentionally left romance out because it tends to become the main focus of discussion, overshadowing other aspects of the narrative.
Because the story takes place at a school, we couldn’t completely avoid romantic feelings, but finding the right balance was tricky. Luckily, Deku was often focused on other things and didn’t notice any romantic attention, which actually worked out well for me – the author didn’t want romance to become a central part of the plot.
When the story reached chapter 394, Toga and Ochako started talking about love. Because of that conversation, I knew I’d eventually need to explore that theme further, so I decided to include it in a later chapter.
I didn’t initially envision romance fitting into the core message of My Hero Academia – the idea of saving and being saved, or the journey of becoming heroes. That’s why I chose to include it briefly in an epilogue, almost as an afterthought.
I didn’t want to show romance directly, but rather love as a piece of something bigger. I’m curious to know if I succeeded.
Fans Hope To See More Of Them Together
Horikoshi Might Drop More Information Soon

Fans enjoyed seeing more of Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka in My Hero Academia Chapter 431, especially after years of hints about their relationship. Now that the manga has finished, however, they haven’t had much chance to see the couple. Many fans are hoping that the author, Kohei Horikoshi, will create some extra stories or ‘one-shots’ in the future. A sequel movie created with Studio Bones is also a possibility, which would be very exciting for fans of the series.

As a huge My Hero Academia fan, I was a little sad to reach the end of the manga – there were 431 amazing chapters! Luckily, you can read them all over on Manga Plus. The anime is still going strong though, and we’re all eagerly waiting for the final season to drop later this year. If you want to catch up or re-watch everything, Crunchyroll is the place to be!
