Just released a few days ago, Pokemon Legends: Z-A is already causing a lot of debate among fans. Some players are disappointed by the new features, the absence of familiar elements, and issues with gameplay. The game has received negative reviews, and many are unhappy with things like how difficult it is to catch certain shiny Pokemon or the long tutorial. It’s clear this game won’t appeal to everyone, and the rarity of obtaining Mega Steelix and Scizor might frustrate even more players.
In *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, some Mega Evolutions are unlocked only after completing the main story. For example, you can only buy the items needed to Mega Evolve Pyroar and Malamar with Mega Shards after becoming the champion and defeating Mega Zygarde. This system feels a bit strange, but it’s particularly disappointing for fans of popular Mega Evolutions like Steelix and Scizor. *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* doesn’t seem to give these favorites much attention, and there are a few reasons why.
- Scyther is only available in Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Wild Zone 13, which is unlocked after Mission 14.
- Onix is only available in Wild Zone 14, which is unlocked after Mission 19.
- There is no Link Cable in the game, meaning that Scyther and Onix need to be traded while holding a Metal Coat to evolve.
- Metal Coats are infinitely available in the post-game, but before that, players have to be Rank A (Mission 35) to unlock the side missions that award one each (Steadfast as Steel and A Feather from Skarmory).
- In order to trade with other players, one has to pay for the Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
- There are no reported instances of wild Steelix or Scizor so far in the game, meaning that they may be trade-only.
- You can’t transfer past versions of Steelix or Scizor to Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Because of all this, it’s clear that Mega Steelix and Mega Scizor are very difficult to get, and players might not obtain them at all – especially since the items needed to evolve them into their Mega forms are available much earlier in the game. This makes it frustrating for players hoping to use these powerful Pokémon.
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you can buy Steelixite and Scizorite Mega Stones right away at the Stone Emporium.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Makes Getting Steelix and Scizor Unnecessarily Hard

Since you progress through the game’s story to unlock content, it’s understandable that Pokémon like Onix and Scyther aren’t available early on, and that the Metal Coat is difficult to find. However, it feels strange that you can buy the items needed to evolve them – Steelixite and Scizorite – right away, while getting the Metal Coat, and even being able to trade to *get* Steelix and Scizor, happens much later in the game.
To fully complete the Pokedex in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you’ll also need to obtain Steelix and Scizor.
Shiny Mega Steelix and Scizor Are Virtually Impossible to Get in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Trading for shiny Pokémon in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* will be more difficult. If you’re hoping to get a shiny Mega Steelix or Scizor, it’ll be even harder because you’ll need to find another player who has already met all the requirements to evolve Steelix or Scizor, has a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and is specifically looking to trade for the shiny version.
While Pokemon Legends: Z-A now has trade codes to make things easier, finding someone to trade with is still tough. Without a chat feature and with random players joining trades, it’s hard to locate a player willing to trade a shiny Onix or Scyther for a Metal Coat. This decision by Game Freak is strange, and it’s unclear why Mega Steelix and Scizor specifically are so difficult to obtain.
