This article contains spoilers from the Solo Leveling manhwa.
One of the most exciting parts of Solo Leveling is watching Jin-Woo defeat enemy after enemy. As he gains control of his incredible new abilities, he becomes a truly dominant power, supported by his powerful and dedicated shadow companions. Throughout the first two seasons, no opponent – whether a monster or another hunter – can stand against Jin-Woo’s immense strength in battle.
I’m really anticipating Season 3 of Solo Leveling, because it seems like we’re going to meet a new version of Sung Jin-Woo. From what I understand, this character will have all the same incredible abilities – controlling the undead, that unmatched combat skill that makes Jin-Woo so powerful – basically, everything that makes the original Jin-Woo the top hunter in Korea. It’s a big question of whether this new character will be as strong as the original, and I’m eager to find out!
The First Shadow Monarch Could Appear in Solo Leveling Season 3
Jin-Woo’s Powers Belong to the First Shadow Monarch

- The first Shadow Monarch, Ashborn, is the original King of the Dead.
- The first Shadow Monarch possesses the same powers as Jin-Woo.
The first two seasons of Solo Leveling have followed Jin-Woo’s incredible journey, showing him rise from a weak hunter to an incredibly powerful one who never gives up. Fans have seen his challenging battles, like the fight with Igris during his Job-Change Quest and his overwhelming victory against the Ant King on Jeju Island. But the anime hasn’t yet revealed where Jin-Woo’s amazing powers come from.
Season 3 of Solo Leveling might finally explain where Jin-Woo’s powers came from and who originally possessed them. Before Jin-Woo became the Shadow Monarch, there was Ashborn – known to fans as the King of the Dead. He was originally a piece of Brilliant Light, created by the Absolute Being, and later became a Monarch of the Shadows. Ashborn is completely devoted to his creator.

There’s a good chance Ashborn will appear in Season 3 of Solo Leveling, likely during the Double Dungeon arc. This is because Jin-Woo will battle Kandiaru, one of Ashborn’s followers, and the system will let Jin-Woo access Ashborn’s memories. This could finally allow the two Shadow Monarchs – both with power over the dead – to connect. If it happens, it would be the first time Jin-Woo has faced someone truly on his level in the series.
The First Shadow Monarch Is Jin-Woo’s Ultimate Equal
Ashborn Chooses Jin-Woo as His Human Vessel

Sung Jin-Woo’s journey mirrors that of the first Shadow Monarch. Both faced incredible hardship and betrayal. Just as Ashborn was abandoned and left for dead, only to become immensely powerful, Jin-Woo was left to fight for survival alone in the Cartenon Temple, overcoming near-certain death and the pain of betrayal.
Ashborn and Jin-Woo share many similarities in their experiences, likely explaining why Ashborn connected with and supported him. By choosing Jin-Woo as his vessel, Ashborn passed on not just his power, but also the duty to guide the future. Seeing Jin-Woo’s strength and determination gives Ashborn hope that his legacy will continue through a worthy successor.
I’m going to finally rest. But you, Shadow Monarch, will live on forever. Because of that, it’s very unlikely our paths will ever cross again. – Ashborn, the First Shadow Monarch, to Jin-Woo
I’ve noticed something interesting about the Shadow Monarch – unlike other powerful beings who came to Earth, he completely trusted Jin-Woo and gave him everything he had. It looks like Ashborn is going to do the same in Season 3 of Solo Leveling, giving Jin-Woo a significant portion of his power. It’s not just about fighting the person who created the System, though; it seems like Ashborn is preparing Jin-Woo for the battles to come against the other Monarchs.
The First Shadow Monarch Is Now Retired
Jin-Woo Succeeds the First Shadow Monarch

After the original Shadow Monarch completes his goal in Solo Leveling, he can finally retire. Jin-Woo will continue his work, carrying on his power, ideals, and influence. Because Jin-Woo is strong enough to handle any challenge and build the future, the Shadow Monarch no longer needs to get involved. This allows him to escape the endless wars and conflicts between the Rulers and Monarchs that previously controlled his life.
As a huge fan of Solo Leveling, I’m getting really excited about Jin-Woo finally unlocking Ashborn’s full potential! But it sounds like we might not see him at peak power right away in Season 3. Apparently, the show will reveal just how strong Ashborn really is bit by bit, which is a cool approach, but means a slower burn. For now, we’re all just eagerly waiting for any news about when Solo Leveling Season 3 will actually drop – the creators and production team are keeping things pretty close to the vest at the moment, and haven’t shared any release date or story details yet.
