I’m so excited! The Mortal Kombat 2 movie is coming out a week earlier than we thought – now it’s hitting theaters on May 8, 2026! Summer 2026 is already looking packed with big releases, but I think Warner Bros. made a smart move by shifting the date. Hopefully, this will give Mortal Kombat 2 a little more time to shine and get the attention it deserves.
The Mortal Kombat movie came out in April 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first full-length live-action film based on the fighting game series since 1997’s Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Though the 2021 film wasn’t as poorly received as its predecessor, it still got mixed reviews from both critics and fans. Even so, a sequel was officially approved in January 2022.
Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Release Date Has Been Moved Up a Week

Following a hint at the end of the 2021 film, Mortal Kombat 2 will star Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. The movie will also bring back familiar characters like Sonya and Jax, along with Cole Young. Plus, it will introduce new fighters from the Mortal Kombat universe who weren’t in the first film, including Sindel, Jade, and Shao Kahn. Originally planned for release on October 24, 2025, the movie’s release has been pushed back to sometime in 2026, according to Deadline.

Originally, the movie was scheduled to come out on May 15, 2026. Warner Bros. decided to push the release date back, believing it would perform better as a summer blockbuster instead of releasing it in the fall of 2025. This decision followed a very positive reaction to the exciting red band trailer for Mortal Kombat 2, which had been released a month earlier. However, just two months later, Warner Bros. has moved the release date up again, now planning to release Mortal Kombat 2 on May 8, 2026.

Warner Bros. hasn’t explained the change, but many believe it’s to avoid competing directly with the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is scheduled for May 22, 2026. Moving Mortal Kombat 2 gives it two weeks of space before the Star Wars release. However, this now places it only a week after The Devil Wears Prada 2. Despite this, the audiences for Mortal Kombat and The Devil Wears Prada are likely very different, so there shouldn’t be much competition between the two films.
