Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Finally Gives Peter Parker Something He Needs

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Finally Gives Peter Parker Something He Needs

As someone who has grown up with Spider-Man swinging through the pages of comic books and the big screen, it’s disheartening to see the once vibrant Marvel Cinematic Universe seem to be losing its way. It feels like they’ve forgotten the lessons that made them great, resorting to mere imitations of their former glory.

Couldn’t we say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe appears to be spiraling inward? It seems that the studio has forgotten some of the key principles they used to establish their empire, suggesting that their initial success wasn’t as exceptional as it may have seemed. While they once meticulously crafted their cinematic universe, now they seem to use it more as a justification for combining characters rather than telling compelling stories. Perhaps The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man could provide an excellent showcase for a standalone story within the MCU, given that he’s been linked to other properties for too long.

The recent announcement of Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU has a lot of fans wondering whether the magic is over. Surely there will be some more great movies and shows in the upcoming slate, but everything seems somehow more cynical now. Deadpool & Wolverine has its charms, but it’s hard not to look at it as a multi-billion-dollar industry hauling out its toys and demanding applause. That release, alongside the RDJ reveal, paints the franchise as the dying sputters of an engine running on an empty creative tank. Luckily, the most recent animated show raises some hope.

As a diehard Spidey fan, I’m eagerly awaiting the next Marvel venture featuring everyone’s favorite web-slinger – Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man! When Disney unveiled this project back in 2021, they christened it Spider-Man: Freshman Year. This series will delve into the life of a fresh Peter Parker, still in the early stages of his superhero journey. Contrasting with the earlier MCU portrayal of Spider-Man, who was already well-established in Captain America: Civil War, this new approach might seem like a step back. However, it’s an innovative and intelligent move to establish a fresh universe for Spidey to shine independently. Despite the apparent departure from the established character trajectory, I’m excited to see how this unique take on Spider-Man will unfold!

The MCU made Spider-Man Iron Man’s protégé

Absolutely, the MCU didn’t follow Peter Parker’s classical origin story, instead crafting a fresh one for him. It’s all good, every hero needs a backstory. Now, there’s something peculiar about the way Tony Stark is woven into almost every aspect of his tale. In “Civil War,” Tony inducts Peter into the team, handing over that legendary suit that symbolizes Spidey so well. In “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” Tom Holland’s debut as our friendly neighborhood superhero, Peter is all about finding his own path. Tony serves as a mentor for him, a beacon in the distance he yearns to emulate. By the end of the film, he matures and rises to that standard, but smartly chooses to serve his city’s people instead, giving up the dream he worked so hard for, feeling more confident than ever in his role as their protector. However, “Avengers: Infinity War” and its sequel reversed those decisions rather abruptly, shaking up many storylines, but none more significantly than Spider-Man’s.

In many Marvel Spider-Man films, Spider-Man’s role is predominantly linked to Iron Man. This setup presents the young hero as a fresh take on the original franchise icon. Characters like Vulture and Mysterio, originally villains from Spider-Man comics, seem more like they were designed for unmade Iron Man movies. They harbor grudges against Tony Stark that are transferred to Peter when he intervenes in their revenge plots. This trend is a significant issue within the Marvel universe, as it often portrays Tony Stark as the unintentional cause of most of the franchise’s problems. Spider-Man seems an unusual choice in this context. His first two films revolve around upholding his predecessor’s legacy, while No Way Home deviates from this pattern but still involves Peter in the legacies of two other Peter Parkers. Throughout, he is not given the chance to craft his own story, much like Iron Man did before him. Essentially, Marvel turns its most famous superhero into a sidekick in others’ movies.

Spider-Man should stand on his own

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Finally Gives Peter Parker Something He Needs

As a die-hard Spidey fan, I’m thrilled to see that my beloved character, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, will deliver on the promise of “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Unlike before in the MCU, Peter Parker won’t solely depend on other superheroes. Instead, he’ll have his unique narrative arc, separate from any other character.

The upcoming Spider-Man animated series could mark a fresh beginning for this beloved character. Despite Spider-Man’s immense popularity, being sandwiched between two massive media giants has somewhat diminished his influence. The new series will set Peter Parker in a world inspired by comics, filled with his own friends, foes, and tales. It’s unfortunate that Spider-Man doesn’t get to fully stand on his own in the movies, but he deserves a limelight that isn’t shared.
