Avalanche Studios has officially shut down its Liverpool office, about two months after first announcing the plans. This unfortunately means 31 people have lost their jobs, continuing a recent trend of layoffs within the video game industry.
The company announced the closure in a statement on its website and expressed gratitude to its affected employees.
Everyone who is leaving has made a significant impact on our projects through their talent, passion, and hard work. We are incredibly thankful for their dedication and valuable contributions to Avalanche Studios Group.
We’re committed to supporting our team during this change and continuing to create fantastic games for our players.
Layoffs Months In The Making
The planned closure of the Liverpool studio was first announced in September, shortly after the cancellation of the Contraband game was revealed. Avalanche Studios explained the decision followed an internal review of the company’s future direction following the game’s cancellation.
They announced that, following a review, they had to make tough decisions about staff and where they operate, which would affect everyone working in Liverpool.
Besides the Liverpool office, the company also intended to reduce staff in Malmö and Stockholm, but there’s been no recent news about those plans.
TopMob has contacted Avalanche Studios to find out about their future plans. We’ll update this article if we receive a reply.
