YouTube is testing direct messages again, though it’s not available to everyone yet. If the test goes well, they plan to bring the feature back for all users.
YouTube first launched a direct messaging feature in 2017, letting users privately message each other and even contact their favorite creators. Although it was taken away after two years, many users have been asking for it to come back ever since.
YouTube Brings Back Direct Messaging, With Some Catches
YouTube recently announced a new way to share videos and connect with other users. Eligible users can now send videos with a request to connect, which recipients can accept or decline. If accepted, the two users can share videos and messages directly on YouTube. Currently, this feature is being tested in Ireland and Poland with users 18 and older. If the test goes well, YouTube plans to expand it to more countries. This direct messaging capability is similar to a feature offered by TikTok, a platform YouTube is competing with for viewers of short-form videos.
YouTube’s new direct messaging feature is expected to be popular, but there are a few important things to know about how it works. YouTube will scan messages to make sure they don’t violate their community guidelines, particularly to prevent harmful or dangerous content. While some users may be concerned about privacy, this monitoring is intended to help avoid issues similar to those seen on other platforms like Twitch. In 2017, Twitch had problems with its private messaging system when a user sent inappropriate messages to a minor. By monitoring messages and requiring users to be 18 or older, YouTube hopes to prevent similar incidents. Users can also report any messages they find inappropriate or that violate YouTube’s rules.
YouTube is giving users more control over their chats. Soon, you’ll be able to delete messages you send, though the recipient will still see their own copy of the conversation. There will also be an ‘unsend’ feature to completely remove messages from both sides of the chat. These plans could change depending on how users react to the new feature.
