One Piece: Oda Already Confirmed Dragon’s Devil Fruit Power 26 Years Ago

This article contains spoilers from One Piece.

With One Piece now entering its final arc, we can expect to see the most powerful characters take center stage, including Monkey D. Dragon – Luffy’s father and the leader of the Revolutionary Army. The story strongly suggests Dragon is a crucial figure, and his full importance will likely be revealed as the war against the World Government begins. Fans are highly anticipating his appearance and are constantly debating what powers and abilities he possesses.

It’s surprisingly well-established that Dragon’s Devil Fruit powers aren’t a mystery. In fact, Eiichiro Oda revealed Dragon using his abilities about 26 years ago, and again around 10 years ago. These instances clearly demonstrate his potent ability to control and manipulate the weather in various ways.

Dragon’s Devil Fruit Was First Revealed In One Piece Chapter 100, 26 Years Ago

It’s not surprising to One Piece fans that Monkey D. Dragon likely has a Devil Fruit power. While he’s incredibly strong and skilled in Haki, he probably isn’t relying on Haki alone. Fans have known for 26 years that Dragon possesses a Devil Fruit, ever since his first appearance in Loguetown. He caused a sudden and dramatic drop in air pressure, immediately signaling a storm to Nami. He used this power to save Luffy from being executed, though many viewers didn’t realize it at the time.

Dragon Can Manipulate Winds With His Devil Fruit

In One Piece chapter 100, Oda demonstrates Dragon using a significant Devil Fruit power. Although the fruit’s identity is still a mystery, the ability—called “Wind Blast” in the English version—allows him to create incredibly strong winds that scatter the Marines. The force of this blast is felt throughout Loguetown, indicating a tremendously powerful skill. This scene clearly establishes Dragon’s ability to easily control the wind.

Dragon Can Also Manipulate Lightning With His Devil Fruit

Dragon first demonstrated his Devil Fruit power by using a lightning strike to rescue Luffy. He used this ability to shock Buggy, freeing Luffy to continue his adventure. This shows that Dragon’s Devil Fruit isn’t limited to just wind manipulation; it also allows him to control other natural forces like lightning and potentially air pressure, or even create thunderclouds. The Storm-Storm Fruit seems like the perfect match for his powers, and would likely be classified as a Logia-type Devil Fruit in the world of One Piece.

Dragon warned Sabo and Ivankov that the true conflict will start when the Holy Knights release their film.

Dragon Used His Fruit Again In One Piece Chapter 794 10 Years Ago

Most fans didn’t realize it, but Dragon appears to have used his Devil Fruit power way back in One Piece chapter 100, over 26 years ago. Even fewer would have caught it during the Dressrosa arc about 10 years ago. In chapter 794, Dragon rescues Sabo and carries him across the ocean to his ship, the Wind Granma. During this rescue, Dragon glows with an aura, hinting that he had recently transformed into his human form.

I’ve always thought Dragon’s Devil Fruit power must be related to flight, and it seems to fall into either the Logia or Mythical Zoan categories. It’s likely he controls the weather, perhaps as a ‘Rain God’ type ability, or maybe his power is the Storm-Storm Fruit – a Logia type. Honestly, the actual name of the fruit isn’t that important. What really matters is what it allows him to do, and it’s interesting to me that we’ve probably already seen hints of its power in the story, even if most fans haven’t noticed.

The newest chapter of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece will appear in this week’s Weekly Shonen Jump. Chapter 1166 is officially scheduled for release on November 23, 2025. In Japan, it will be available at midnight on Monday (11:00 AM EST / 8:00 AM PT). Fans can read it for free on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app.
