It’s common for free-to-play games to offer optional in-game purchases, often for cosmetic items. However, things have reached a new level in the game Where Winds Meet, with one player reportedly spending over $40,000 on an in-game boat, raising questions about how far these purchases should go.
The developers of Where Winds Meet emphasize that the game isn’t ‘pay-to-win,’ stating that player progress depends on skill and decisions, not how much money they spend. While the open-world martial arts RPG doesn’t require purchases to become powerful, players can still spend a lot of money on cosmetic items. Streamer BranOnline recently shared a screenshot on Twitter showing a player, Scy, who purchased an in-game boat for a remarkable $42,000.
At first, I suspected the price was inflated, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Some estimates put the actual cost as high as $60,000, and I’ll explain that later. The Mirage Boat is a special mount that lets you travel a fixed route, and you can invite other players to join you. Essentially, it’s a very impressive display of wealth – it’ll make everyone want to play with you – but it comes at a steep cost.
To unlock the Mirage Boat, you’ll need 170 Mirage Torn Pages. These pages are bought with Harmonic Cores, which are very rare – you only have a small chance (less than 1%) of getting one from the game’s premium currency system. Luckily, the game guarantees a rare reward, like a Harmonic Core or an outfit you can break down for two Cores, after 150 attempts. (Thanks to Reddit user Silent-Musician-7918 for sharing this information!)
Estimates suggest the Mirage Boat could cost around $40,000, though the actual price varies based on luck and how much time you’re willing to spend playing. These figures, originally calculated by Chinese players and reported by Gamersky and Dexerto, put the total cost around 300,000 Chinese Yuan – which currently converts to over $42,000. However, my experience shows the price can also differ depending on your location.
Content creator Tamriver calculated that getting a Harmonic Core through the game’s ‘gacha’ system could cost around $330. If you have really bad luck and need to spend that much every time, collecting the 170 Mirage Torn pages needed would total over $56,000! That’s a lot of money, although you do get a nice outfit along with it, at least.
This boat is expensive, and many players are surprised someone purchased it so quickly after the game’s release. One player questioned, sharing photos of the ship’s recent voyage, “Who would spend $40,000 on this boat?”
It’s cool to see some players really investing in the game, honestly. I saw someone on Reddit jokingly call them ‘whales’ – like they’re keeping the whole free-to-play experience going for the rest of us. It’s kinda funny, but also, yeah, I appreciate them keeping the servers running!
It seems Scy wasn’t alone in purchasing the Mirage Boat recently. One Reddit user mentioned seeing three people create the boat or its accompanying outfit since the game launched. At least it’s allowing free players to enjoy the boat, which is a positive thing.
