Punch Line

Episodes 12
Runtime 4 hours 24 minutes

MAPPA, the studio behind popular anime like Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Vinland Saga, and Chainsaw Man, created a truly bizarre and hilarious anime back in 2015. Called Punch Line, and written by Kotaro Uchikoshi (known for the Infinity and Zero Escape series), the story centers on Yuta Iridatsu, who becomes separated from his physical body during a bus hijacking. Now a spirit with unusual powers and guided by a cat spirit named Chiranosuke, Yuta discovers his abilities are amplified when he sees women’s underwear. There’s just one catch: if he sees two pairs while in spirit form, an asteroid will destroy the world.

Yuta suddenly gains a strange new ability and uses it to investigate the odd people living in his building, all while dodging a secret group determined to destroy the world. It’s a wildly fun ride if you don’t overthink it and just embrace the craziness. Though different from other games by the same creator, Punch Line still has a surprisingly good story that’s easy to finish in a couple of days.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead

Episodes 12
Runtime 4 hours 36 minutes

Akira Tendo, 24, had a bright future, but he found himself stuck in a dead-end job that made him miserable. When a zombie outbreak throws everything into chaos, he unexpectedly gains freedom from his responsibilities. Akira decides to make the most of it by embarking on a quest to complete 100 life goals before the apocalypse claims him.

This anime is a blast! It features well-developed characters and surprisingly good animation from Bug Films, the studio also working on Witch Hat Atelier. Zom 100 was a standout series in 2023, but it hasn’t gotten nearly enough recognition. If you’re tired of the same old zombie stories and want something fresh and entertaining, definitely check this out.

Full Metal Panic!

Episodes 24
Runtime 9 hours 12 minutes

Full Metal Panic! is a fantastic anime that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves from today’s viewers. The story centers around Sousuke Sagara, a member of an anti-terrorist group, and Kaname Chidori, an ordinary high school student who possesses hidden abilities. Sousuke is assigned to protect Kaname, and their relationship is the heart of the show. Their interactions are often funny and sometimes touching, showcasing the series’ excellent writing.

The first season of Full Metal Panic! has 24 episodes, easily watchable over a weekend. If you’re up for a longer binge, you can also watch the funny spin-off, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, and then complete the series with Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid and Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory.

Steins;Gate

Episodes 24
Runtime 9 hours 12 minutes

Many anime based on popular visual novels disappoint fans, but White Fox’s 2011 adaptation of Steins;Gate is a standout success. It’s considered one of the very best.

The story takes place in Akihabara, Tokyo, in 2010. It centers around Rintaro Okabe, a self-described mad scientist, and his friends Mayuri and Daru, who together form the “Future Gadget Laboratory.” Their lives change when Rintaro finds the body of a researcher named Kurisu Makise, only to discover she’s still alive and his message about her was somehow sent to the past. This accidental discovery of time travel leads Kurisu to join the group, and they begin experimenting with this new ability.

Steins;Gate is a captivating story filled with mystery and memorable characters. It’s a really engaging series that’s perfect for a weekend binge-watch.

Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family

Episodes 13
Runtime 2 hours 36 minutes

Despite being a spin-off, Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family is a surprisingly delightful addition to the Fate series. It reimagines the characters from Fate/stay night and Fate/hollow ataraxia in a peaceful, everyday setting. The show centers around cooking, with each episode showcasing various Japanese dishes prepared and enjoyed by Shiro and his companions.

This anime is a delightful look into everyday life, especially for those already familiar with the Fate series. However, even if you’re new to it, you can still easily jump in and enjoy the show. It’s a relaxing and heartwarming watch that anime fans of any age or taste are sure to love.
