Pokemon TCG Fan Makes Incredible Find in Storage Unit Purchase

A Pokemon Trading Card Game collector recently had an incredible find while searching through a storage unit – a highly sought-after and valuable Pokemon item. While new expansions are always being released, older Pokemon card sets often prove to be the most valuable. Sets like Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil, which first came out in 1999, are among the earliest and most prized, and many of the cards within them have retained their value over time.

The original set of Pokémon cards released in 1999 includes some of the most valuable and well-known cards ever made. The Charizard card from that set is particularly famous and can be worth a fortune – some perfectly preserved versions have sold for as much as $250,000! Many older Pokémon cards are worth a good amount of money, with first edition copies of popular Pokémon like Blastoise and Venusaur often selling for hundreds of dollars when in good condition. Recently, a Pokémon fan made an incredible discovery when they found a huge collection of cards while buying out a storage unit.

Pokemon Fan Makes Stunning Discovery in Storage Unit

A Reddit user named MostThingsGeek shared an exciting discovery with the Pokemon TCG community: a sealed box from the original Base Set expansion. Their uncle recently bought a storage unit and found the box inside. While it appears to be from the Unlimited print run rather than the rare 1st Edition, other users confirmed the packaging looks authentic and consistent with the original Wizards of the Coast design. This is considered a highly valuable find for Pokemon collectors.

A remarkable discovery of a sealed Pokémon booster box could earn a Reddit user a significant amount of money if they decide to sell it. Similar sealed boxes from the original Pokémon Base Set often sell for tens of thousands of dollars, recently reaching as high as $31,000 on eBay. Currently, there are only two of these boxes available on TCGPlayer, with the least expensive one listed for $28,000.

Why is Pokemon’s Base Set So Valuable?

The high value of sealed Base Set booster boxes isn’t just about the cards inside. As the very first Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion, it holds a lot of nostalgia for original fans. The chance of finding a rare Base Set Charizard – a PSA 10 version of the Unlimited Base Set recently sold for $18,000 on eBay – is a major factor. Plus, with the set being so old, sealed boxes are increasingly hard to find, as most have been purchased by collectors.

The original Pokemon Base Set was so important to the game’s success that The Pokemon Company has repeatedly tried to recreate its popularity. Recent expansions, like XY Evolutions and Celebrations, have included reprints of cards from the earliest sets, with XY Evolutions largely focusing on the Base Set. The enduring appeal of classic Pokemon, especially Charizard, has also been a key part of the game’s marketing over the years. Even after more than two decades, the Base Set remains a beloved and iconic part of the Pokemon universe.
