As someone who grew up in the golden age of gaming, I can confidently say that these iconic characters have left an indelible mark on my childhood and continue to captivate gamers worldwide.
In the early ’90s, mascots emerged as powerful marketing assets for video game companies. Iconic figures like Mario (from Nintendo) and Sonic (from Sega) led successful family-friendly franchises, making them the recognizable symbols of their respective companies. Even local arcades used Pac-Man’s image in promotional materials. The upcoming console during this period was the pioneering PlayStation.
Instead of simply introducing a single mascot, Sony’s ambition has always been to shine the spotlight on all the characters they have in their care. In other words, they’ve got some of the most iconic video game characters from the past at their disposal. (First person: As a gamer, I can tell you that Sony’s got an impressive roster of beloved gaming mascots under their wing.)
10 Kratos
God of War (2005)
In the mid-2000s, the God of War series turned out to be an unexpected success, maintaining its dominance for nearly a decade thereafter. Players found themselves assuming control over the semi-divine character, Kratos, as he battled his way through a roster of legendary Greek gods and monsters, a role thrust upon him by Aries.
By the time of his second and third home console releases, Kratos was one of PlayStation’s most identifiable characters, although the franchise lost some steam following the release of 2010’s God of War 3. However, the license’s 2018 revival proved to be one of the best games of that year, and it propelled Kratos back into the limelight. He may not be cute and cuddly, but the Ghost of Sparta has established himself as a Sony mascot and an example of the quality the company can provide.
9 Nathan Drake
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (2007)
Over time, video games have become increasingly sophisticated or cinematic in nature. The first installment of “Uncharted” on the PlayStation 3 marked a new phase for Naughty Dog. Although this game is often viewed as one of the weaker titles in the series, it paved the way for a succession of well-received sequels that offered thrilling action sequences, stunning graphics, and endearing characters. In many ways, “Uncharted” was an advancement of the “Tomb Raider” concept, with Nathan Drake effortlessly stepping into Lara Croft’s role.
The “Uncharted” series has gained such widespread popularity that virtually every newly released PlayStation console features an image of Nathan Drake in its promotional materials, and it’s also been turned into a film. Consequently, this action protagonist has unexpectedly taken on the role as a symbol for the brand.
8 Ratchet and Clank

In the early 2000s, simplicity appeared crucial when designing video game mascots. Since Microsoft had introduced the Xbox featuring the widely acclaimed Master Chief as its mascot, Sony needed a fresh concept for the PlayStation 2.
The solution was the team of Ratchet and Clank, who are known for their platforming adventures. One character exudes the allure and adorableness reminiscent of past video game mascots, while the other is a resourceful robotic companion. Despite being an unusual duo, these two gaming legends are easily identified by gamers across different generations.
7 PaRappa the Rapper

PaRappa the Rapper embodied all the qualities a video game company would look for in a mascot. Being a lovable animal clad in skater attire with an edgy demeanor, he was able to attract both young and older audiences alike.
Initially, many gamers might mistake PaRappa the Rapper for a typical platforming character akin to Mario or Sonic. However, that assumption would be incorrect, as PaRappa the Rapper is actually a rhythm-based music game. This game can present a challenge even for younger players, which means not all fans embraced him as a mascot. Despite this, Sony still occasionally uses him as a marketing asset due to his game’s quality.
6 Sack Boy
LittleBigPlanet (2008)
Back in 2008, I stumbled upon a game that truly stood out – LittleBigPlanet. It was a unique puzzle-based platformer where my creativity was the key to success. Since then, the series has only grown stronger, but let’s face it, with its trial-and-error gameplay, my character often ended up taking a beating. But hey, it was all worth it for those little kids who found joy in watching their favorite character bounce back after every fall!
Introducing Sackboy, a lively heap of fabric that brings a touch of humor to the harsh reality of video game jumps. His perpetual grin makes him an endearing protagonist, instantly winning over players. While the games offer complex mechanics for mature gamers, it’s Sackboy’s charm and cuteness that appeals to younger audiences. This dual appeal is what makes Sackboy such a brilliant mascot.
5 Aloy
Horizon Zero Dawn (2017)
In the Horizon series, Aloy is the central character, known for her skill with a bow. This franchise, one of Sony’s recent triumphs, outshines other iconic characters like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro in terms of contemporary relevance. Although games featuring Crash and Spyro have been around longer and have more history, Aloy is making significant waves in the current gaming landscape. In 2017, when Horizon Zero Dawn was first launched, it was a strong candidate for Game of the Year, ultimately placing second, trailing slightly behind The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
After that, Sony has continued to invest heavily in the Horizon series of games, solidifying Aloy as a prominent icon for their console. Now that Sony has agreed to bring their top-selling games to PC, including Horizon, Aloy’s fan base has expanded even beyond consoles.
4 Crash Bandicoot

From the moment I first encountered him, Crash Bandicoot has been a staple in the gaming world, with his original games still holding up admirably even after all these years. There were some bumps along the way when it came to the franchise, but those missteps didn’t stop this iconic character from staying relevant. It looks like Sony is keen on keeping Crash Bandicoot around for a long time to come.
3 Spyro the Dragon
Spyro the Dragon (1998)
Sony found itself drawn to a surge in interest for a mascot character, resulting in the adoption of numerous adorable and vibrant entities into their brand. Consequently, the initial “Spyro the Dragon” video game was released barely two years following the premiere of “Crash Bandicoot”. The affection for Spyro’s deep purple hue quickly grew, and the franchise’s treasure-hunting concept made it more enticing to replay compared to other platform games available during that period.
In simpler terms, Spyro is a beloved character from the ’90s that brings a wave of nostalgia among gamers. His initial series of games were re-created during the 2010s, and there have been ongoing rumors about another game in the series for quite some time now.
2 Lara Croft
Tomb Raider (1996)
1996’s groundbreaking title “Tomb Raider” might seem somewhat primitive compared to modern gaming standards, but it was nothing short of revolutionary in its time. Back then, “Tomb Raider” offered gamers everything they craved from a 3D adventure on the PlayStation – puzzles, platforming, and action-packed combat, set within environments that were unparalleled in video games at the time.
The gameplay propelled Lara Croft to the forefront of the gaming world, creating one of gaming’s most cherished female characters. During the PlayStation 1 era, the franchise was ubiquitous, releasing new installments almost every year. Although the series has experienced its highs and lows over the past decade and is no longer exclusive to PlayStation, the public’s affection for Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series has persisted.
1 Astro Bot
Astro Bot (2024)
Astro Bot initially starred in the experimental PS4 title “The Playroom“, leveraging the console’s AR capabilities. Subsequently, this charming robot has been seen in “Astro Bot’s Rescue Mission (2018)” for PlayStation VR, followed by a tech demo called “Astro’s Playroom (2020)” on the PS5. The latest appearance of Astro Bot is expected to be in “Astro Bot (2024)” exclusively for the PS5.
Although he started from simple beginnings, the tremendous achievement of the latest 3D platformer, Astro Bot, has significantly boosted his recognition, making him PlayStation’s most prominent emblem. This is underscored by the fact that Astro Bot remains, and will probably always be, an exclusive character on PlayStation, acting as a demonstration of technical prowess and a trailblazer in showcasing the potential capabilities of Sony’s future console launches.
