This article contains spoilers for the Tokyo Revengers manga and anime.
Tokyo Revengers is a highly acclaimed shonen manga that gained significant popularity following the debut of its first anime season in 2021. This manga series was created by mangaka Ken Wakui, who had already published ten other manga titles as early as 2017. The initial season of the anime proved to be extremely successful, leading to the swift announcement of a second season that premiered in January 2023.
In the manga of Tokyo Revengers, our protagonist Hanagaki Takemichi discovers a unique power to move between the present and 12 years ago via a casual handshake. This extraordinary ability is triggered by the tragic death of his middle school sweetheart, Hinata Tachibana, at the hands of the Yakuza. In an attempt to alter this grim fate, Takemichi decides to join forces with a notorious biker gang stationed in Shibuya, Tokyo – the Tokyo Manji Gang (Toman). His mission is to modify the group’s ways from within and keep its charismatic leader, Mikey, from succumbing to misfortune and the malevolent influence of the primary antagonist, Kisaki Tetta.
What Is The Tokyo Manji Gang?
- Founded on: June 19, 2003
- Founding Members: Mikey, Draken, Mitsuya, Kazutora, Baji, and Musashi.
In Tokyo, Japan, a motorcycle gang known as the Tokyo Manji Gang, or simply Toman, emerged from Shibuya. This group was established on June 19th, 2003, with an initial group of six members: Mikey, Draken, Mitsuya, Kazutora, Baji, and Musashi.
The group came together following Mikey’s victory over Kazutora’s longtime friend and partner, who later sought revenge aided by the 9th generation of the Black Dragon Gang – an organization initially established by Mikey’s elder brother. This group was primarily created to confront them, with Mikey taking on the role as leader, Draken as his deputy, and the rest serving as commanders.

In this gang, the structure closely resembles that of many motorcycle clubs. Notably, there’s a chief figure who functions like a captain, wielding the greatest power within the group. Just beneath her stands a deputy or vice-captain, offering advice and serving as a secondary leader. Following these top two ranks are the Commanders, each responsible for overseeing a specific sector. Beneath them is a Vice Commander, selected by the Commander to assist and act as their right-hand. Finally, Squad Leaders, who have authority over the remaining division members, are subordinate to all of the above.
The First Generation
- Leader: Manjiro Sano (Mikey)
- Vice Leader: Ken Ryuguji (Draken)
It’s likely that many readers recognize the initial Tokyo Manji Gang, as the subsequent generation appears much later in the storyline. Although this group underwent some alterations, their basic organizational setup stayed consistent, and their leader continued to maintain control.
It’s no secret that Sano Manjiro, more famously known as Mikey, is the head of the original Tokyo Manji Gang, a position he earned during its inception in 2003 due to his exceptional strength. Beneath him stands Draken, serving as the vice leader. Throughout the narrative, Draken has consistently been portrayed as Mikey’s right-hand man, offering unwavering support. He is also one of the most formidable members within the gang.

In terms of Commanders, this area has undergone the most significant transformations. When the story began, the group was led by five division commanders: Keisuke Baji (First Division), Takashi Mitsuya (Second Division), Haruki Hayashida (Third Division), Nahoya Kawata (Fourth Division), and Yasuhiro Muto (Fifth Division). Over the course of the narrative, the order changes; for instance, after Hayashida’s arrest, Tetta Kisaki takes his place, or when Baji dies, Takemichi steps up as leader of the First Division. Following the Valhalla arc, a sixth division emerges under Shuji Hanma, but this doesn’t last very long.
The Second Generation
- Leader: Takemichi Hanagaki
- Vice Leader: Chifuyu Matsuno
Following the events of the Tenjiku arc, Mikey dissolved the Tokyo Manji Gang, allowing Takemichi to return to a seemingly peaceful future. However, Hanagaki opted to travel back in time with the intention of saving Mikey. During this journey, he reactivated the Tokyo Manji Gang, giving birth to its second generation.
Even though most of its members have been replaced, it still maintains the identical organizational structure as the previous Tokyo Manji Gang – a chief, a deputy leader, and 6 divisions, each with their respective commanders. In this current era, Takemichi assumes the role of the leader, despite his physical weakness, resembling Mikey’s older brother, Sano Shinichiro. Beneath him stands Matsuno Chifuyu, who once served as his right-hand man. The 6 division commanders consist of both veteran and new commanders, with Seishu Inui, Takashi Mitsuya, Haruki Hayashida, Nahoya Kawata, Senju Kawaragi, and Taiju Shiba being notable among them. The Division Vice Captains in this version include Hakkai Shiba, Ryohei Hayashi, as well as Souya Kawata.
The Worst Version of the Tokyo Manji Gang
- Leader: Manjiro Sano (Mikey)
- Vice Leader: Tetta Kisaki
In this particular timeline, one of the darkest outcomes Takemichi encounters is where Tetta Kisaki rose to become Mikey’s right-hand man. As a result, things have spiraled out of control in this world, with even Takemichi and other Tokyo Manji Gang members transforming into unsavory individuals. In this alternate reality, Kisaki has effectively seized control over the Tokyo Manji Gang and twisted it into its most malevolent form, with some original members still present.
In a regrettable turn of events, the Black Dragons were temporarily in control. Fortunately, this phase was brief as Takemichi chose to alter its course. Unfortunately, before he could, Chifuyu tragically sacrificed his life.
Takemichi’s Final Leap
The Final Version of the Tokyo Manji Gang
- Leader: Manjiro Sano (Mikey)
- Acting President: Takemichi Hanagaki
- Vice Leader: Ken Ryuguji (Draken)
Almost tying the knot with Hinata and living blissfully was Takemichi’s original plan. But when it came to rescuing Mikey from his troubled state, he leaped through time once more, in an attempt to set things aright.
In chapter 277, readers witness a collaborative effort between Takemichi and Mikey, aimed at rectifying all the past mishaps and potential future issues within the story. This altered timeline introduces new characters like Takemichi, Sanzu, and Kisaki as founding members. Interestingly, this revised reality also ensures everyone’s survival, including Mikey’s brother, Shinichiro Sano.
In the latest iteration of the Tokyo Manji Gang, Mikey and Draken maintain their roles as leader and vice leader respectively. However, an unexpected addition has been made – Takemichi now serves as the interim president. This gang is divided into eight key sectors, each headed by a captain: Baji Keisuke, Mitsuya Takashi, Hayashida Haruki, Handmiya Kazutora, Sanzu Haruchiyo, Kawato Nahoya, Shiba Taiju, and lastly, Kurokawa Izana.
In November 2022, the Tokyo Revengers manga wrapped up its storyline. Those eager to follow along can easily access and read all the volumes containing every chapter.
