Honestly, as someone who loves a really good story, I think Frieren just blows Solo Leveling out of the water when it comes to everything except the action. Solo Leveling definitely delivers on the fights – it’s built around that, being a web novel about battling monsters. But a ton of action isn’t enough to make a truly great anime, in my opinion. Frieren nails all the other stuff – the story, the world, the characters – and that’s what really sets it apart. It just feels more complete and well-developed, and that’s why I enjoy it so much more.

Frieren, the main character in her anime, is a more compelling character than Sung Jinwoo. While watching Frieren, you see her constantly learning and reflecting on her past mistakes, focusing on both personal growth and increasing her power. Sung Jinwoo, from Solo Leveling, is driven by admirable goals – becoming stronger to protect his family – but the story becomes predictable. Each arc generally follows the same pattern: Sung Jinwoo faces a powerful enemy, has a brief struggle, and then easily wins. This repetition prevents Sung Jinwoo from developing into a complex and nuanced character, leaving him feeling somewhat flat.

Frieren Is Superior To Solo Leveling In Many Departments

Frieren excels where Solo Leveling falls short when it comes to supporting characters. Solo Leveling largely centers on Sung Jinwoo, leaving its side characters, even powerful S-rank Hunters, underdeveloped due to a lack of focus. In contrast, Frieren features characters like Fern, Heiter, Himmel, and Stark who are well-developed and play significant roles in the story. While Solo Leveling Season 3 might have improved animation and action, these improvements can’t compensate for the story’s weaker character development. Ultimately, Frieren offers a higher level of overall quality and will likely remain the stronger series.
