The RPG market has been incredible this year, with so many new releases it’s almost too much to keep up with! Even updated versions of older games, like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, were huge hits. With so many great options available, it was really hard to choose the best one.
Best Role-Playing Game Of 2025 Winner—Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
If we focus solely on what makes a great role-playing game – things like compelling quests, a rich world to explore, and solid RPG systems – then Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 clearly deserves to be named RPG of the year.
Warhorse Studios designed this game for dedicated RPG fans. Kingdom Come II isn’t a casual experience – it demands your full attention and careful choices, as mistakes can have serious consequences. The game avoids unnecessary features and offers incredible freedom in how you develop your character and approach challenges.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 offers a deeply immersive and realistic experience that might not appeal to all players, but its incredible depth and detail make it truly special. It’s the result of years of passionate development, creating a one-of-a-kind RPG with complex character progression. With over four million players already enjoying it, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a strong contender for RPG of the year and a classic role-playing game.

Best RPG Game of 2025 Nominations
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is technically more polished and refined than Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but it doesn’t offer as compelling of a role-playing experience. While Sandfall’s game challenges you, it doesn’t provide the same level of open-ended freedom and options that KC2 does.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is undeniably a fantastic game, and it’s made history by winning a record nine awards at The Game Awards 2025. The way you approach each battle – your team composition, how you develop your character’s skills, and exploiting enemy weaknesses – dramatically changes the experience. It’s a strong contender for Game of the Year and will likely be remembered for years to come. However, when considering it within the RPG genre specifically, it doesn’t quite reach the level of the best RPGs.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Monster Hunter Wilds feels like the most accessible and welcoming game in the series so far. While some longtime fans might not love every change, Capcom has once again succeeded in expanding the appeal of Monster Hunter. Both Wilds and its predecessor, World, have moved the series beyond a niche audience, bringing the fun of monster hunting to a much wider player base.
Okay, so Monster Hunter Wilds is going all-in on a huge, seamless open world – it feels truly alive now. And get this, we finally have our own dedicated mount to get around! They’ve also been messing with the combat, refining attacks and making things feel smoother. Capcom is promising a ton of post-launch support too – they’re already showing what to expect with Update 4, and it looks like they’ll be consistently adding content for a long time after the game releases.
The Outer Worlds 2
Obsidian Entertainment had a busy 2025, releasing and supporting the RPG Avowed. However, the biggest event for the company was likely the release of The Outer Worlds 2, which, with help from Tim Cain, is a fantastic sequel to their 2019 hit, The Outer Worlds.
The game has been significantly updated and improved in almost every way. It features a ton of exciting weapons and gives players much more freedom in how they complete quests. With its funny quirks and detailed character progression, this RPG is definitely worth checking out!
