The PlayStation Plus game selection has been particularly strong lately. While it started gaining momentum in October with the availability of Alan Wake 2, the November and December lineups were especially impressive.
This month’s PlayStation Plus lineup was packed with great games! Subscribers enjoyed the popular indie game Stray as a free monthly title, and Extra and Premium tiers included favorites like Red Dead Redemption and Tomb Raider: Anniversary. December’s free games featured the co-op horror titles Killing Floor 3 and The Outlast Trials, alongside the family-friendly LEGO Horizon Adventures. With Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty recently added to the Extra tier, the service has been consistently delivering strong value.

Gamers are already curious about the PlayStation Plus games coming in January 2026 and hoping the service continues to deliver great value. Luckily, we can get a pretty good idea of what to expect. Although the exact ‘Essential’ games won’t be revealed for a few days, and the ‘Extra’ games for a few weeks, past trends suggest whether a month will be strong or weak. Considering the quality of games offered in recent years, it’s likely PS Plus will start the new year with another impressive lineup.
How Has January Gone For PlayStation Plus Traditionally?
PlayStation Plus offered a selection of free games in January 2025, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered, and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. While the lineup—featuring two remasters and a cooperative shooter that wasn’t universally loved—might not appeal to everyone, Kill the Justice League had recently received all of its post-release updates, including a new playable character, Deathstroke. This January’s selection of essential games was a bit weaker than usual. For comparison, January 2024’s free games included A Plague Tale: Requiem, Evil West, and Nobody Saves the World, and in 2023, players could get Fallout 76, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Axiom Verge 2.
January is usually a great month for PlayStation Plus members. Sony often tries to make the service appealing to people who received money as gifts during the holidays. And the good games aren‘t just limited to the basic subscription level. For example, while Kill the Justice League was a somewhat controversial headliner last January, the Extra tier saw fantastic additions like God of War Ragnarok and Like a Dragon: Gaiden. In 2024, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Resident Evil 2 Remake were big additions to Extra, and in 2023, Devil May Cry 5 and Back 4 Blood joined the lineup. Considering this pattern, it’s likely January 2026 will also be a strong month for PlayStation Plus subscribers.
Although PlayStation Plus Premium doesn’t get massive updates regularly, there have been some notable games added in recent Januarys. These include Medievil 2 (2025), Legends of Mana and Secrets of Mana (2024), and Syphon Filter 3 (2023).
Potential PlayStation Plus Additions for January 2026
As PlayStation Plus looks ahead to 2026, Sony has several options to make it a great year for subscribers. One approach would be to feature critically acclaimed games from award shows – titles that might have been overshadowed by the popularity of Expedition 33. Games like The Alters would be strong contenders for the main Essential tier, and some of the best indie nominees could also be included. Another strategy could be to generate excitement for Sony’s upcoming 2026 releases, such as Saros from Housemarque and Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac. Since Spider-Man 2 is a few years old, adding it to the service would make sense, and Returnal, currently available on the Extra tier, would also be a great Essential title – Sony has offered games on multiple tiers before.
Looking ahead to January 2026, PlayStation has a good track record of delivering strong content for its PS Plus subscribers. While it’s always possible Sony could surprise us with a less-than-stellar lineup of free games across the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers, it’s likely PS Plus will continue its recent streak of offering three valuable titles each month.
