Oldest Characters In Demon Slayer

The core of Demon Slayer revolves around the fight to stay alive, even when facing overwhelming odds. The Hashira, skilled demon slayers, often enter battles knowing they might not survive. Despite their power, they are all quite young, barely having lived long enough to truly begin their lives. This contrasts sharply with the demons they fight, who can live for centuries if they aren’t defeated.

I’ve noticed something fascinating about demons in Demon Slayer. Besides being incredibly strong, durable, and fast, they don’t seem to age. They stay looking exactly as they did when they first became demons. This makes them, without a doubt, the oldest characters in the series – especially the Twelve Kizuki, who are incredibly ancient. Though, even among Muzan’s most powerful demons, there’s a surprising range in how old they actually are.

Biological age and the age stated in the story aren’t always the same. To keep things consistent when ranking characters, we’ve used the age specifically mentioned. When a character’s age isn’t clear, we’ve referred to the manga to make our best estimate.

7. Gyutaro

Daki’s Dangerous Brother

  • Age: 126+
  • Manga Debut: Chapter 85
  • Anime Debut: Episode 40
  • Combat Style: Hemokinesis

Muzan Kibutsuji always thought Gyutaro was more powerful than his official rank showed and believed he’d be better off alone. However, Gyutaro had spent his whole life protecting his sister, Daki, and couldn’t bear to leave her side.

My past pain taught me to seek revenge by making others suffer. I believe I need to inflict as much misery on others as I’ve experienced myself to feel justice. That’s just the way demons are – we silence anyone who questions it, even with violence.

When Gyutaro was only 13 years old, he was abandoned and left to die after defending his sister in a troubled world. He eventually became a terrifyingly powerful demon. Doma was already part of the Twelve Kizuki when Gyutaro became a demon, and since Gyutaro transformed after Akaza, he was younger than both of them. However, Gyutaro was actually older than Gyokko, who previously held the position of Upper Rank Five.

6. Doma

The Upper-Rank Two of the Twelve Kizuki

  • Age: 133+
  • Manga Debut: Chapter 98
  • Anime Debut: Episode 45
  • Combat Style: Cryokinesis

Doma is likely the most cunning and evil demon currently in existence. Though younger than demons like Hantengu, he’s quickly become one of the most powerful members of the Twelve Kizuki, ranking just below Kokushibo. He was only 20 years old when he became a demon.

You’ve got it wrong. There’s no heaven or hell in this world – they’re simply stories people created. The truth is, good people often face hardship, while those who do wrong sometimes seem to get away with everything.

Doma leads a dangerous cult called the Eternal Paradise Faith. He pretends to be a savior to gain people’s trust, but secretly consumes them to satisfy a craving for human blood. Each victim not only strengthens Doma, as an Upper-Rank Two demon, but also makes him feel younger.

5. Akaza

The Upper-Rank Three of the Twelve Kizuki

  • Age: 133+
  • Manga Debut: Chapter 63
  • Anime Debut: Episode 32
  • Combat Style: Destructive Death

Akaza turned into a demon at the young age of 18 and has been one of the most powerful members of the Twelve Kizuki for a long time. He’s likely a few years older than Gyutaro, based on when they both became demons.

Though younger than Hantengu, the Upper Rank Three has already become more powerful. Akaza dislikes Doma and is determined to fight him for a higher position. Akaza, likely only a few years younger than the Upper Rank Two, views Doma as a rival he needs to overcome. Despite being a formidable demon who frightens his opponents, the Upper Rank Three constantly strives to improve his abilities.

There’s a lot of debate about Akaza and Domu’s ages, but most people believe Akaza is older. If Domu were older, it would likely make Akaza even more upset about being ranked lower in power.

4. Hantengu

The Prolific Criminal-Turned-Demon

  • Age: 200+
  • Manga Debut: Chapter 98
  • Anime Debut: Episode 45
  • Combat Style: Spear Projection, Wood Manipulation, Sonic Scream, Wind Blasts, Emotion Manifestation, and Electricity Generation

Hantengu was a terrifying demon who had lived for over 200 years. He was dangerous and unpredictable, often portraying himself as the victim. Though incredibly old, he wasn’t strong mentally and frequently relied on trickery and avoidance. However, when Hantengu transformed, he became nearly unstoppable.

3. Kokushibo

Muzan’s Right-Hand Man

  • Age: 480+
  • Manga Debut: Chapter 99
  • Anime Debut: Episode 45
  • Combat Style: Moon Breathing

Kokushibo is an incredibly powerful and terrifying demon who was once a Demon Slayer himself. He betrayed the Corps, joining Muzan out of fear of dying, and has remained one of Muzan’s most loyal and trusted followers for hundreds of years. He was a talented swordsman who even unlocked a special mark, but ultimately chose to serve the Demon King.

For centuries, dating back to the Sengoku period, Kokushibo has fought in numerous battles and defeated incredibly powerful enemies. He’s widely considered the most skilled swordsman ever, and remarkably, even after living for hundreds of years, he remains dedicated to improving his abilities.

2. Tamayo

The Demon Who Vowed to Defeat the Demon King

  • Age: 500+
  • Manga Debut: Chapter 14
  • Anime Debut: Episode 8
  • Combat Style: Blood Bewitchment

Tamayo is an incredibly ancient demon, second in age only to Muzan himself. She intensely dislikes the Demon King and actively works to help defeat him. Having existed since Japan’s Sengoku period, she’s seen the peak of demon slayer history and has extensively researched demon biology, hoping to find a way to restore demons to their human forms.

I’ve realized it’s not about overpowering someone to defeat them. It’s about eroding their strength, chipping away at what keeps them going. And just like you’d fight tooth and nail to survive, we’re equally determined to ensure you don’t. We’ll do anything, absolutely anything, to bring that about.

Tamayo is a close friend of Tanjiro and has been assisting the Demon Slayer Corps since Ubuyashiki asked for her support.

1. Muzan Kibutsuji

The Demon King

  • Age: 1,000+
  • Debut: Chapter 13
  • Anime Debut: Episode 7
  • Combat Style: Biokinesis

More than a thousand years ago, Muzan Kibutsuji was a normal person battling a deadly disease. A risky medical treatment saved his life, but it also transformed him into a demon. While this granted him incredible power, it left him vulnerable to sunlight. Haunted by the fear of dying, Kibutsuji became obsessed with achieving immortality.

Muzan Kibutsuji has been pursuing his dark goals since the Heian Era, causing chaos for centuries and watching demon slayers emerge. His power was nearly ended during the Sengoku Era when demon slayers came close to wiping out demons, including him. Now, in the Taisho period, he faces another major challenge: a new generation of swordsmen has discovered the secret to the legendary strength of past demon slayers.
