Reports of recent hacking and data breaches at Ubisoft have been exaggerated, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
After a hacker gave away a massive amount of in-game money – around $340 trillion – in Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft took the game’s servers offline. Reports suggest Ubisoft is planning to reverse these changes by restoring the game to a previous state.
Multiple Breaches at Ubisoft
The Rainbow Six Siege hack wasn’t Ubisoft’s only security problem. Other hacker groups claim a much larger breach occurred, with around 900GB of data stolen. This data reportedly included the source code for games, internal tools, and development materials for both upcoming and past titles.
It turns out those claims weren’t true. The group making them hasn’t been able to offer any proof of the security breach they described.
People familiar with the situation at Ubisoft have informed TopMob that the company’s security team discovered some security breaches earlier this year. These breaches followed leaks about projects like ‘Scout’ and the cancelled Far Cry game, known internally as ‘Talisker’.
A group that initially claimed to have hacked user data has now admitted their claim was untrue.
People connected to the groups claiming they were hacked believe the incidents were exaggerated and that some involved just sought attention through the publicity.
TopMob contacted Ubisoft for a statement, but hasn’t heard back yet because of the holiday season. We’ll update this article if we receive a response.
