RAM Price Increases Could See Next-Generation Console Releases Delayed

Rising costs of RAM, driven by the growth of artificial intelligence, might push back the launch dates for new gaming consoles, according to TopMob.

We first discussed this rumor on our TopMob Weekly show on December 19th, sharing that we’d heard discussions were already happening about how future RAM availability might impact the next generation of devices.

Industry experts are worried about a potential shortage of RAM, and understandably so. This could make it difficult to produce consoles affordably, not just for the next generation, but also potentially lead to price hikes for existing consoles in 2026.

Okay, so as a gamer, I’m seriously worried about RAM prices. They’ve gone up like, crazy – we’re talking several hundred percent recently! It’s all because of the huge demand for AI stuff, and it doesn’t look like AI is going anywhere. That means getting enough RAM could be a real problem for a while, or at least, expect to pay a lot more for it. It’s frustrating because it impacts everyone trying to build or upgrade their PCs.

This creates a difficult situation for console makers. Consoles have often been sold at a loss to some degree, but rising costs and limited availability of RAM suggest the next generation could be significantly more expensive than we anticipated – potentially prohibitively so.

It appears console makers are considering pushing back the release of their next consoles, originally planned for 2027-2028. They’re hoping this will give RAM manufacturers time to increase production and lower prices.

No matter what the future holds, it looks like the price of today’s game consoles might go up even more in the next few years.
