Donald Glover Says Star Wars Skywalker Skywalker Was Too Serious

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various galaxies, I wholeheartedly agree with Donald Glover’s sentiments about wanting to bring fun back to Star Wars. The last few installments seemed to forget that the original charm of the franchise was its ability to entertain while still delivering an engaging story.

Donald Glover recently shared some fresh insights regarding his intentions for the upcoming Lando Star Wars film. He expressed a desire to reintroduce an aspect he believes was absent in the Star Wars: Skywalker saga.

2019 marked the ending of the Star Wars Skywalker saga with The Rise of Skywalker, a blockbuster that earned over a billion dollars but wasn’t well-liked by many fans. After its release, Lucasfilm and Disney have found it challenging to launch a new Star Wars movie. Notable projects like Kevin Feige’s Star Wars film have either been shelved or are still in the works for several years. Among these developing projects is the Lando Calrissian movie that Donald Glover is co-writing with his brother, Stephen Glover. Initially announced as a Disney+ series, the Lando movie has since been redeveloped into a feature film.

During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Donald Glover shared his vision for Lando Calrissian in Star Wars. “I aim to make it enjoyable,” said Glover, expressing that as a Star Wars enthusiast himself, he feels it’s crucial for the franchise to offer more enjoyment. “It can be tough to find joy these days,” added Glover, but he emphasizes its significance:

It’s challenging due to the heavy events taking place, yet it’s these very events that bind us together in an odd way. I understand why things need to be serious, but I believe a crucial part of being human is having moments of joy. Unfortunately, I feel we could use more of that right now.

In simpler terms, Donald Glover expressed his thoughts on the heavy tone of the Star Wars Skywalker saga, stating that it can occasionally be overly serious. He said, “Star Wars is great, but it can get really intense sometimes. Sometimes it’s just too intense.” He further added that everything related to the Skywalkers seems excessively serious.

Lando, what I admire most about him is his roguish nature, and I believe many folks can connect with that. Plus, he might be saying something like, “This conflict is ridiculous! I need some cash,” which seems relatable to all of us. Essentially, my aim is to infuse ‘Star Wars’ with a sense of fun; I want it to be enjoyable above all else.

Fans of Donald Glover might find his thoughts on the Star Wars saga relatable. While both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi have garnered a mix of supporters and critics, The Rise of Skywalker was mostly met with negative reviews. Critics largely criticized The Rise of Skywalker for questionable creative choices like the return of Ian McDiarmid’s Emperor Palpatine or failing to fully utilize the storyline opportunities set up by The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. However, some argue that the Star Wars franchise may have overemphasized its mythology at the expense of providing enjoyable entertainment for audiences.

In contrast, “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Revenge of the Sith” are certainly darker installments within the “Star Wars” series. However, the first “Star Wars” movie was essentially a lighthearted and enjoyable popcorn flick. Maybe Donald Glover’s Lando film could revert the franchise to its roots and offer a fun “Star Wars” experience that rekindles hope in the beleaguered space saga.

The Star Wars saga is available on Disney Plus.
