According to a new report from Deadline, Danny Ramirez won’t be appearing in season three of HBO’s The Last of Us. He joined the show in season two as Manny Alvarez, a former Firefly who helped Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) track down Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal).
The first two seasons of HBO’s The Last of Us focused on Joel and Ellie, but season 3 will shift the spotlight to Abby. The new season is anticipated to mirror the structure of the second part of The Last of Us Part 2, presenting Abby’s side of the story and the events that led to the intense confrontation at the Pinnacle Theater in Seattle.

According to Deadline, Danny Ramirez won’t be returning as Manny Alvarez in Season 3 of The Last of Us, likely because of scheduling issues. HBO hasn’t confirmed this or any other casting news for the upcoming season. While the reasons for Ramirez’s potential scheduling conflict haven’t been officially stated, it may be connected to his current role as Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After playing a role in The Falcon and Winter Soldier and the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World (2025), Danny Ramirez will reprise his character in Avengers: Doomsday. He’s expected to be part of Sam Wilson’s new Avengers team. While most of Avengers: Doomsday was filmed last September, there are reports of additional shooting scheduled for January 2026. Filming for Avengers: Secret Wars is planned to start in Summer 2026, but it hasn’t been confirmed if Ramirez will be in that film.
I’m hearing that filming for The Last of Us Season 3 is now planned to start in April 2026. It sounds like Danny Ramirez, who played Manny, won’t be able to come back, and a lot of fans are guessing it’s because of his commitments to Marvel. That’s just a rumor for now, though! They’re already looking for someone new to play Manny, but so far, nobody knows who it’ll be – there haven’t even been any hints or leaks!
Both seasons of HBO’s The Last of Us have received positive reviews from critics, despite some debate over a particular choice in Season 2 – a debate that also occurred with the release of The Last of Us Part 2 in 2020. Both seasons currently have high scores on Metacritic (84 for Season 1 and 81 for Season 2), earning them the site’s “Universal Acclaim” designation.
Despite critical acclaim for both seasons of The Last of Us, co-creator Neil Druckmann announced in July that he’s reducing his creative role on the show. He’s shifting his focus to writing and directing a new game from Naughty Dog called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, following the conclusion of season two’s finale roughly a month prior.
Shortly after Neil Druckmann announced he was stepping back, Halley Gross, an executive producer and writer, also confirmed her departure from the show. It’s currently unknown who will take over their creative roles. While HBO hasn’t announced a specific release date for Season 3 of The Last of Us, CEO Casey Bloys told Variety in July that the season is “definitely planned” for 2027.
