A Skyrim player hadn’t launched the game in a year and was delighted to find a cute surprise. It’s pretty common for Skyrim players to return and forget what they were doing, but this time the surprise was a mod they’d completely forgotten about.
Skyrim is famous for its incredibly active modding community. Players have created mods for almost anything you can imagine, from simple graphical improvements to complete overhauls that transform the game into something completely different – some even turn it into a Pokémon-like experience! While Skyrim is fun to play on its own, after 14 years, many players use mods to enhance or change their experience. NexusMods, a popular modding website, currently hosts over 100,000 mods just for the Special Edition of the game.
Maxwell the Cat Welcomes Player Home to Skyrim
A Reddit user named Havry97 recently started a new game of Skyrim after a year-long break. They discovered a surprise when they loaded up with their old mods still active – they’d forgotten about a mod that adds a cat named Maxwell to the game! In a clip shared online, the player is exploring Jorrvaskr in Whiterun when they hear a faint, happy tune. Following the sound, they find a room where the Stone of Barenziah should be, but instead, there’s a tiny, spinning Maxwell the Cat.
Many fans of Skyrim have been enjoying a mod that replaces the Stone of Barenziah with a spinning Maxwell the cat. It’s available on NexusMods and quickly became popular. While it’s a humorous addition, players have noticed it can actually be useful! The mod’s music helps players locate the often-hidden stones needed for the ‘No Stone Unturned’ quest – a quest that requires collecting 24 stones to rebuild the Crown of Barenziah. Plus, the mod even adds a spinning Maxwell to the Crown when it’s displayed in the Thieves Guild, making it even more fun.
Maxwell the Cat and Spinning Cat Skyrim Mods
Maxwell the Cat became a popular meme in 2022. It began with a picture of a tuxedo cat that someone turned into a 3D model using Garry’s Mod. The model quickly gained traction in the game, and a short clip of it spinning with music added went viral. This is what really launched Maxwell into widespread popularity, eventually leading to the creation of a Skyrim mod about a year later.
This cat mod is fun and charming, but it’s just one of many silly cat additions to the game. Another modder created a version of Maxwell the Cat that players can carry around in Skyrim. Plus, the famous spinning OIIA OIIA cat also has its own mod, turning it into a playable follower. If you’re trying to find the Stones of Barenziah, though, it’s probably best not to use both mods at once. The OIIA OIIA cat constantly plays its song, which might make it hard to hear anything else, including clues related to the Stones.
