Weekly Shonen Jump is the world’s most popular manga magazine. It’s famous for launching incredibly successful series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia, among many others.
Many Japanese manga series that become hits in Japan quickly gain popularity worldwide, but this isn’t always true. One notable exception is Kochikame, a long-running series from Weekly Shonen Jump that hasn’t achieved the same level of success outside of Japan. Despite this, Kochikame is incredibly popular within Japan, and to celebrate its 50th anniversary, a new anime has been announced. This new adaptation could finally bring the comedy manga to a global audience.
Kochikame Is Getting A New Anime In 2026
- A New Anime Is Planned In Celebration of The 50th Anniversary of the Series
I’m a huge fan of Kochikame! It’s such a legendary series – it actually started way back in 1976 in Weekly Shonen Jump! Osamu Akimoto created it, and it ran for an incredible length of time. It was a massive hit with manga fans all over Japan, and I was definitely one of them. After all those years, it finally finished in 2016, having reached a whopping 201 volumes! It’s amazing to think about how long it ran and how much content there is.
Many fans of Kochikame are aware that it was adapted into an anime series. However, this anime is fairly old, originally airing from 1996 to 2004.
Kochikame is getting a new anime series in 2026! The remake was officially announced and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original manga. More details about the release will be shared at a later date.
Kochikame Is One of Japan’s Best Known Comedy Series
- A New Anime Could Popularize it Overseas
Kochikame is incredibly popular in Japan and considered one of the most successful comedy manga aimed at young boys. However, it hasn’t achieved the same level of recognition internationally. When the anime adaptation was first released, anime wasn’t as widely popular outside of Japan, which meant Kochikame was largely overlooked by many international viewers.
With a new anime version being created, the series has a good chance of becoming more popular with international audiences. This would be fantastic for the franchise, though its success will depend on how well the anime is made and whether fans outside of Japan enjoy its comedic style. Still, it’s a really promising development.
