Matthew Mercer is a hugely popular figure in the world of live-play Dungeons & Dragons. He’s a successful voice actor, and for over a decade, he’s been the Dungeon Master for Critical Role, the most-watched live D&D show. But when Critical Role‘s fourth campaign began, Mercer surprised everyone by handing the DM role to Brennan Lee Mulligan, a game master and comedian known for Dimension 20.
Matt Mercer Isn’t DMing Critical Role Campaign 4 Due to Burnout
Viewers now have confirmation about why Mercer stepped down as Dungeon Master. While many suspected as much, he revealed in a podcast interview last August that he was worried about burnout and needed a break. He described the constant pressure to be creative as exhausting and frightening, and it ultimately led to his decision to pass the role for Critical Role Campaign 4 to Mulligan.
Burnout is a state of mental exhaustion that happens when someone deals with long-term stress, especially when they’re constantly pushing to perform. It’s not just something that happens in games like Dungeons & Dragons – people can experience it at work, while pursuing creative hobbies like art or music, or even from playing video games. It’s actually quite common, particularly with the popularity of games that are constantly updated and require ongoing effort.
Dungeon Masters are especially prone to burnout because they invest a lot of time outside of game sessions preparing adventures and creating custom content. Then, during the game itself, they often spend three to five hours – or even more – leading the game multiple times a week. They have to be a storyteller, rule enforcer, problem solver, and educator all at once, keeping everyone involved and having fun, which can easily lead to exhaustion.

He was running games for a huge group – like seven or eight people – every single week. He’d easily be putting in 70+ hour weeks, and that’s before you even factor in his acting! No surprise he really needed some time off.
How Does Critical Role’s Matt Mercer Handle DM Burnout?

He advises others to pay attention to warning signs and prioritize taking breaks to recharge. Once he did, Mercer was able to regain his energy and creative spark, continuing to enjoy playing in Critical Role’s fourth campaign and occasionally running one-shot games and live events. He believes that taking time to rest is ultimately more productive than trying to push through burnout.
I’ve learned that stepping away and giving yourself time to recharge your creativity actually saves time in the long run. The time you might lose by pausing will be more than worth it when you come back feeling genuinely inspired and refreshed.
