The recent 30th anniversary livestream for Persona disappointed many fans who were hoping for news about upcoming games. While there was a lot of excitement beforehand, some viewers felt the event focused more on selling merchandise than revealing anything new.
The Persona series first began in September 1996 and has become a leading name in Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). The six core games in the series are known for classic features like turn-based battles and characters who don’t speak. The series gained even more popularity with the release of Persona 3 in 2006, and has continued to grow thanks to spin-off games and updated versions, particularly after the huge success of Persona 5 in 2016.
Persona 30th Anniversary Livestream Reveals Nothing New About the Games
Fans were excited for news about a new game during the livestream celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Persona series, as the last major game release was almost ten years ago. However, the presentation focused on merchandise like t-shirts, hoodies, and keychains. While there were announcements about upcoming events with companies like Daimaru and Keio Railway, and a concert series featuring game music, the highlight for many international fans has been a collaboration with Sanrio, featuring the game characters reimagined in the style of Hello Kitty. This Sanrio project has been a positive surprise amidst what some fans see as a lack of major game announcements.
Fans were eagerly anticipating an announcement about Persona 6 during the recent anniversary livestream. While series producer Kazuhisa Wada did appear and thanked fans for their support in a short message, he didn’t mention anything about a new game. A Twitter account dedicated to tracking the lack of Persona 6 news even shared Wada’s message, jokingly lamenting his silence on the topic.
Fans expressed disappointment at the lack of new information regarding Persona 4 Revival, the full remake of Persona 4 announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in June. The topic was addressed very briefly – within the first minute of a presentation lasting over 40 minutes. Ami Koshimizu, the Japanese voice actress for Yukiko Amagi, acknowledged fan interest but the conversation shifted to the history of the Persona series and her experiences with the character, without offering any new details about the remake.
Despite current fan disappointment, the 30th anniversary of Persona isn’t until September 20th, leaving Atlus and Sega time to share news about future Persona games. Recent leaks indicate good progress on both Persona 6 and Persona 4 Revival, even though one hasn’t been officially announced. Fans exploring the updated 30th anniversary website have also noticed a potential release schedule that places Persona 4 Revival as a later release, followed by a “to be continued” message – hinting at more announcements. Many are hoping to see Persona 6 added to that schedule soon.
