Rumor: Steam Machine Price Leaks Online

A Czech store accidentally revealed the price of the Steam Machine by including it in the website’s code. And it might not be what people were hoping for. There’s a lot of excitement about Valve’s new Steam PC/console, but also a lot of concern about how much it will cost. This is due to several factors.

  • Popular YouTuber and tech expert Linus from Linus Tech Tips commented on the Steam Machine’s price, stating it will likely sell for at least $699 based on its $600 components.
  • Since the hardware is a hybrid between PC and console, it has some more expensive parts that can make it quite pricey to buy, especially from third-party sellers if or when Steam’s supplies run out.
  • There is an ongoing supply shortage of RAM, which is used in the construction of PCs, phones, and consoles, potentially affecting the final price of the Steam Machine as well as the Switch 2.

Valve hasn’t announced when the Steam Machine will be released or how much it will cost, leaving many details uncertain. However, a Czech retailer called Smarty, an official Valve partner, may have revealed the console’s price.

Say Hello to The Steam Machine’s $1,000 Price Tag

According to the retailer’s information, the new console will be available in two models: one with 512 GB of storage and another with 2 TB. Both are listed on the website, though the prices are hidden in the code. The 512 GB version is rumored to cost 19,826 Czech Koruna, which is about $950. The 2 TB version is reportedly priced at 22,305 Czech Koruna, or around $1,069. These prices don’t include tax, and the retailer typically adds a 17% markup, so the final prices could be higher.

  • Around $800 for the 512 GB Steam Machine
  • Around $900 for the 2 TB Steam Machine

These amounts would be $810.90 and $913.25, respectively. This is calculated by dividing the original figures by 1.17 to account for Smarty’s 17% margin.

Considering possible increases in price caused by the RAM shortage, changes in exchange rates, and Valve’s own internal adjustments, the 2 TB Steam Machine could easily cost $1,000 or more – possibly $999 as a strategic pricing tactic. Whether that’s a good value depends on your perspective, but many online commenters believe the console isn’t worth buying for over $800, given its hardware specs.

Is the Steam Machine Worth Buying at $1,000?

Some argue you could build your own gaming PC instead of pre-ordering a Steam Machine. However, with the high cost of graphics cards and RAM, a custom PC might actually end up being more expensive. Plus, like the Steam Deck, the Steam Machine will probably require you to buy accessories separately, adding to the overall cost.

Even though Smarty says it’s connected to Valve, the price might be higher than what you’d normally pay on the Steam store.

Even if the reported price is accurate, Valve’s console could be a great choice for gamers who don’t own a powerful gaming PC, or who want to play their Steam games on a console – or both. This is because gaming PCs and other consoles are becoming increasingly expensive, making the Steam Machine a solid, middle-of-the-road option between traditional consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo, and high-end computers.
