Rumor: New Switch 2 Hardware Revision Leaked

Rumors are circulating online about potential updates to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. These rumors stem from an unreleased Nintendo hardware model code that’s been shared on social media. While Nintendo hasn’t confirmed what this code signifies, fans are speculating it could indicate a lighter, more affordable version of the Switch 2, or something else entirely.

Within its first six months, the Switch 2 became a huge success for Nintendo, selling over four million units in Japan by January 11th – surpassing the lifetime sales of the GameCube in that region. However, sales slowed down a bit during the recent holiday season. With the global economy facing challenges and prices rising, some shoppers decided against buying a Switch 2. Although games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A performed well, these releases, which also work on older Switch models, weren’t enough to drive significant upgrades to the newest console for everyone.

Mysterious Nintendo Model Code Fuels Speculation

I think I’ve discovered something interesting, but I have no idea what it implies: On Nintendo’s Account Portal, there’s an unused model code under the name “OSM”. (The Switch 2’s model code is BEE.) The portal has images for each Switch model, and requesting OSM returns an image of a Switch 2. — sky :3 (@dootsky.re) 2026-01-15T06:59:14.173Z

Okay, so I’ve been seeing some interesting chatter online about a possible new Nintendo console! Apparently, someone over on Bluesky noticed a model code – “OSM” – hidden in the Nintendo Account Portal. It doesn’t seem to be connected to anything currently available. This quickly spread to a Reddit thread about gaming leaks, and people are already speculating about what it could be. One user thinks “OSM” might stand for “Ounce Small Model,” hinting at a potential Switch 2 Lite. Just like they did with the original Switch, Nintendo might be planning a smaller, more affordable version alongside the main Switch 2 console. It’s all just rumors for now, of course, but it’s definitely got me excited!

An upcoming Nintendo hardware is the Talking Flower so OSM can maybe be an abbreviation for Oshaberi Super Mario (oshaberi furawa is the transliteration of the Japanese name of the talking Flower). I also see the product name HAD, do we know which is? — (@polmo.bsky.social) 2026-01-16T08:46:33.729Z

Following a discovery by Dootsky.re, a Bluesky user named Polmo suggested that “OSM” might have a different meaning. Polmo proposed that it could stand for “Oshaberi Super Mario,” with “Oshaberi” meaning “Talking” and referencing the Talking Flower from the game Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Therefore, the “OSM” code could be related to this flower, which Nintendo has announced will be available as a toy in spring 2026. Despite this, the code itself didn’t reveal what specific product it was intended for, and Nintendo hasn’t officially clarified its purpose.

Dootsky.re reports that the next Nintendo Switch, often referred to as the Switch 2, has the model number BEE. Previous Switch consoles used HAC as their model code initially, while updated versions with improved batteries were designated HAD. The Nintendo Switch Lite, released in September 2019 – two years after the original Switch – used the code HDH. The Switch Lite was a more affordable option at $199, thanks to its smaller size and built-in controllers, making it a great choice for kids or families who wanted multiple consoles.

What Would a Switch 2 Hardware Revision Be Like?

The Switch OLED model came out in September 2021 and included a bigger screen and an improved dock. Its packaging used the model code HEG. While the original Switch generally cost $299, the OLED version was $349 – $50 more. Since the Switch 2 is already priced at $449, using an OLED screen instead of the standard LCD would have significantly increased its cost.

If the Switch 2 follows the trend of its predecessor, we likely won’t see updated versions like a ‘Lite’ or ‘OLED’ model for at least two years after its release. While these are just possibilities right now, a Switch 2 Lite could be more affordable due to its smaller size, and an OLED version might offer improved features for a higher price. Don’t expect any revisions in 2026, though. Nintendo says the current shortage of RAM isn’t affecting the Switch 2’s price right now, but that could change. Ultimately, Nintendo hasn’t revealed its hardware plans beyond the initial launch.
