One Piece Proves Devil Fruits Are More Broken Than Haki Once Again

This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Final Saga.

In the world of One Piece, Haki and Devil Fruits are two of the most crucial abilities. Devil Fruits were first shown right at the beginning of the story and have been a central power system ever since. Over time, the author, Oda, has created a huge number of different Devil Fruits, and continues to add even more new ones.

Haki, a powerful spiritual energy, was fully explained to fans around the middle of the One Piece story. It’s just as crucial as Devil Fruits, and in the New World, it might even be more important. That’s because Haki can overcome many different abilities, including those granted by Devil Fruits and even unusual powers like immortality.

Both Haki and Devil Fruits are powerful abilities in the world of One Piece, but Eiichiro Oda has consistently shown that Devil Fruits ultimately have a higher potential for strength. This was recently reinforced in chapter 1171, confirming that Devil Fruits are, in fact, more powerful than Haki.

Haki and Devil Fruits Are One Piece’s Two Most Important Powers

  • Haki Is A Spiritual Energy
  • Devil Fruits Are Mystical Powers

Devil Fruits first appeared in the very beginning of One Piece when Luffy ate one, thinking it was a simple rubber fruit. As the story progressed, more about these fruits was revealed, including the fact that they fall into three main categories. The most straightforward type is the Zoan fruit. These fruits allow the user to transform into an animal or a human-animal hybrid. Essentially, any creature found in the animal kingdom can be a Zoan-type Devil Fruit in the world of One Piece.

Logia-type Devil Fruits are considered the most powerful. They let users transform into elements like fire or wind, making them incredibly strong. A key benefit of Logia fruits is that they grant near-invulnerability, as users can become intangible, making them very difficult to fight.

Besides the Logia and Zoan types, all other Devil Fruits – those that create or manipulate things – are classified as Paramecia by the author, Eiichiro Oda. This is the most common and adaptable type of Devil Fruit in the One Piece world.

Haki is a special spiritual ability within the world of One Piece. According to Rayleigh, everyone possesses it, but very few actually unlock its potential. There are three different kinds of Haki, though most people only develop two of them.

  • The Color of Arms
  • The Color of Observation

Haki is a power that lies hidden within everyone. It’s the ability to feel spiritual energy and overpower opponents, and while everyone possesses it to some extent, most never awaken it. — Silvers Rayleigh

I’ve been studying these special abilities, and it’s fascinating. There’s one called Observation Haki, which is like developing a sixth sense. It dramatically boosts your awareness – you can feel danger coming, understand how strong someone is, and even get a read on their personality. It’s like being constantly ‘on’. Then there’s Armament Haki, which is different. It uses spiritual energy to create a kind of invisible armor, both for attacking and defending. What’s really interesting is that Armament Haki can break through the defenses granted by Devil Fruit powers, making it crucial when fighting those who possess them.

In the world of One Piece, there’s a rare and powerful ability called Conqueror’s Haki. It’s incredibly uncommon, found in only one in a million people, and is linked to having a strong will and ambition. Conqueror’s Haki lets a person use their sheer power to dominate or intimidate others.

Only those with a strong desire for power can develop this advanced form of Haki. It’s more powerful for both offense and defense than regular Armament Haki, making it extremely dangerous and potentially the strongest ability of all.

The Newest Devil Fruit Is Far More Broken Than Haki

  • Loki’s Devil Fruit Could Kill King Harald

Many One Piece fans consider the Color of the Supreme King to be the strongest ability in the series, and there’s some truth to that. Haki is the only known power that can overcome the immortality of the Holy Knights, and when combined with Armament Haki, it can even bypass Devil Fruit powers. However, Devil Fruits are generally more powerful overall. In chapter 1171, the author, Oda, demonstrated that Devil Fruit abilities can achieve things that Haki simply can’t, as shown in the fight between King Harald and Loki.

Fourteen years ago, when the fight against King Harald started at Aurust Castle, three incredibly powerful individuals – Gaban, Shanks, and Loki – possessed Supreme King Haki. Gaban was particularly skilled with it, and both Shanks and Loki could use it effectively. However, surprisingly, even with their strong Haki abilities, none of them could defeat King Harald. It wasn’t until Loki consumed the famed devil fruit of Elbaf that he finally managed to stop him.

Loki’s Powers Can Do What Even Supreme King Haki Can’t

In chapter 1171, Scopper Gaban revealed that Harald kept healing from any damage, no matter how much power he used against him. Gaban felt this meant Harald was unstoppable, like a world-ending threat. However, Loki managed to halt Harald’s advance. Gaban strongly suggested Loki’s Devil Fruit played a key role, potentially possessing an ability that could negate even Harald’s incredible regeneration and immortality. Given that Loki’s Devil Fruit is a Mythical Zoan, this power might be an inherent trait of the creature it’s based on. This highlights that, even with powerful Haki, Devil Fruits can sometimes be overwhelmingly strong.

The Five Elders are describing King Harald as possessing immense, almost terrifying power. They believe he’s become immortal, a truly chilling prospect, and now transcends being simply a monster – he’s a force of destruction, a weapon unto himself.

I’ve noticed a recurring theme in the powers within the One Piece world – some abilities are just overwhelmingly powerful. Take Luffy’s Nika fruit, for example. It basically lets him do anything he can dream up, and it’s an ability that Haki, no matter how strong, can’t overcome. Then there’s Imu, who can turn people into demonic slaves. It’s incredible – even someone as powerful as Rocks D. Xebec couldn’t defend against it. And even if someone with immense Haki could, Imu could just create a whole army of slaves to win. It seems like these incredibly strong Devil Fruit abilities will always outpace what Haki can offer. I suspect there are many other powers like this hidden within the world of One Piece – abilities that are simply too broken to be countered.

Haki Is More Versatile Than Devil Fruits

Although some Devil Fruit powers can be incredibly strong, Haki remains a more well-rounded and dependable ability. A pirate can reach the highest levels of power in the One Piece world using Haki alone, something that isn’t possible with a Devil Fruit. Both Haki and Devil Fruits are valuable, but Haki offers greater flexibility and consistency. Recent events in the story have shown Devil Fruits can be extremely potent, but Haki still generally reigns supreme.

Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga, One Piece, follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as they search for the legendary treasure, the One Piece. The story is currently in its final arc. A new chapter, number 1172, will be released in this week’s Weekly Shonen Jump. It will be available on February 1, 2026, at 12 AM Japan Standard Time (11 AM Eastern Time, 8 AM Pacific Time). Fans can read it for free on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app, which helps support the creator.
