Best PSP Games You Can Play On PS5

Best PSP Games You Can Play On PS5

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that the PSP era was a golden age for portable gaming. With its compact size and powerful hardware, it managed to deliver console-quality experiences on the go – something we’re only now starting to see again with modern handhelds like the Switch.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the often overlooked PSP console by Sony. Remarkably, some of its most cherished titles have been breathed new life through remastering. Take “Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7” for instance, which has revisited a classic prequel focusing on Zack. Similarly, “Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep” has provided a captivating prequel, filling in some missing pieces of the story. Even the first-party games like “LocoRoco” and “Patapon” have been given a second chance with their remasters.

There are improved versions of PSP games that can be bought on the PlayStation 5, or they come free with specific levels of PS Plus. These versions improve the graphics and offer additional features such as save states. Are many PSP enthusiasts aware of this secret project? Let’s explore some lesser-known treasures Sony has helped bring to light on the PlayStation 5.

6 Daxter

The Ottsel Finally Gets His Due

Daxter was among the initial games released on PlayStation Portable, serving as a spin-off from the popular series “Jak and Daxter.” The story unfolds between the first and second game, immediately following the moment when Jak and Daxter are transported into the future and Jak is abducted. In his quest to find Jak, Daxter encounters new companions within a city setting and takes up a job as an exterminator, equipped with a small electric flyswatter.

Although it might appear unusual, the gameplay and platforming aspects were strong points. Moreover, Daxter remained as amusing as ever, standing out among Sony’s most humorous sidekicks. If you’re a fan of the PSP and this particular series, don’t forget to explore Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier on your PS5, marking the final installment in the series.

5 Jeanne d’Arc

France Fights Back Against English Monsters

she obtains a magical armband that allows her to transform, reminiscent of Sailor Moon. The game also features anthropomorphic animals such as pigs and lizards.

This game is also a strategic role-playing title, complete with gear selection screens and grid-style maps. Strategic RPG enthusiasts shouldn’t miss out on it. Although a complete remake or follow-up would be fantastic, the PS5’s internal emulation offers an excellent alternative, allowing players to legally and conveniently enjoy the game once more.

4 Killzone: Liberation

A Tactical Top-Down Shooter

From its initial release on the PlayStation 2, the Killzone series has seen a new game come out for every system except the PS5. While most titles in the series are first-person shooters, this PSP spinoff, Killzone: Liberation, stands apart. It’s a top-down shooter that incorporates elements of strategy gameplay, similar to the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon games.

As a seasoned gamer, I’ve found myself in countless battles where the odds are stacked against me – the enemy forces just keep coming. That’s why it’s crucial to be tactical and think on my feet as I advance through this game. There’s an arsenal of weapons and gear to discover, not to mention the intriguing narrative that keeps me hooked. It’s a pity they didn’t produce more games like this in top-down style for the PSP or PS Vita, but who knows, maybe we’ll see more someday and I can revisit these exciting battles once again.

3 Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters

It Really Doesn’t

Back in 2007, I got my hands on “Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters” for the PSP, and let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint! Just like its witty title suggests, this game delivered a complete Ratchet & Clank adventure right in the palm of my hands. After wrapping up all the PS2 games, Insomniac Games served us another epic intergalactic journey, where our duo hops from one alien-infested planet to another to save the galaxy yet again.

Two characters are brimming with diverse weaponry, including Ratchet’s reliable wrench. As they progress, Ratchet gains more health (HP) and his weapons also upgrade in unpredictable ways. This formula was initially established in the second game on the PS2, where it reached its peak. Although Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters didn’t bring anything groundbreaking to the story or gameplay mechanics, it still offered an engaging action platformer experience on the PSP that has aged well on the PS5.

2 Resistance: Retribution

The English Front In The Alien War

In “Resistance: Retribution,” the struggle against the alien invaders known as Chimera persisted during World War II. The gameplay transitioned from a first-person shooter to a cover-based shooter, enhancing the gaming experience on the PSP. Moreover, the new main character, James Grayson, was deemed superior to the previous protagonist, Nathan Hale.

James being a member of the British Army made the game’s setting more relatable since the battlefield was set in Europe. Additionally, he was an engaging character with a troubled past, and his journey was supported by a strong ensemble of non-player characters. It’s unfortunate that there weren’t many games similar to this one on the PSP or more installments of the Resistance series beyond the PS Vita. The unique approach to World War II history in this game was intriguing, and it became even more captivating when the war moved to North American soil in the second installment.

1 Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

Gabe And Lian Return

  • Platforms: PSP, PS2
  • Released: March 14, 2006 (PSP Version)
  • Developer: Bend Studio
  • Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

The game, titled “Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror,” marked the debut of the Syphon Filter series on the PSP and had been a long time since the last release. Contrastingly, “Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain,” which was on the PS2, didn’t garner the same positive reception as the original trilogy from the PS1. Therefore, this game, along with its sequel “Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow,” both of which run smoothly on the PS5, can be seen as a revitalized revisit to the series’ roots.

Gabe and Lian resumed their undercover operations worldwide, featuring enhanced stealth capabilities, an array of weapons, a variety of gadgets, improved shooting mechanics, and other advancements. The games were successful enough on the PSP to receive PS2 port versions as well. However, they arrived too late in the lifespan of the console, and unfortunately, no Syphon Filter game was developed for the PS3 during that period. By 2010, the PS2 port of “Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow” marked the last entry in the series.
