Metaphor: ReFantazio - 7 Unique Combat Mechanics

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the upcoming release of “Metaphor: ReFantazio” has piqued my interest in more ways than one. The game’s innovative approach to status ailments and Synthesis Attacks seems to be shaking up the familiar formula that Atlus games have been known for.

ReFantazio is Atlus’ fresh intellectual property, but it’s not entirely original as it draws significant inspiration from prominent series within their portfolio. The battle system, which utilizes the Press Turn mechanic, resembles that of more recent Shin Megami Tensei games. However, it also incorporates social aspects akin to the Persona series.

In contrast to other titles, Metaphor ReFantazio manages to innovate its combat system by introducing unique elements that deviate from the norm and intrigue players as they attempt to grasp its new dynamics. This analysis will concentrate on combat features absent in past games or at least missing in recent prominent releases.

7 Replay Your Battles

  • Choose to restart a battle from the beginning anytime on your turn.
  • Keep trying a difficult battle without restarting from a save file.

At any point during their turn, a player has the option to restart the current battle from scratch. This means that the battle will commence exactly as before, thus precluding the possibility of reversing an ambush, but it offers unparalleled flexibility by allowing multiple retries without any repercussions.

The only barriers to replaying is that it must be your turn, and if your party gets wiped out the battle ends. This can be done on boss fights, and on all the base difficulties, giving players a very useful tool against even the most difficult battles.

6 Stack More Buffs & Debuffs

  • All Buffs and Debuffs go to rank 3.

In previous games, players could only boost a given ability a limited number of times, usually one or two. However, ReFantazio introduces an innovative feature that allows players to increase the strength of a buff up to threefold. Each stack provides a significant boost, and having three stacks on a single skill can dramatically alter the outcome of a battle.

Buff effects typically persist for just three rounds, after which they must be re-applied. However, applying a buff before the three rounds have passed will reset the duration counter. This feature can work both ways; if an opponent manages to accumulate three instances of any buff, it could potentially lead to a swift resumption of the game.

5 Unscathed Victories

  • Unscathed Victories are not earned in Overworld combat.
  • Easily earned when landing ambushes.

Unscathed victories occur when a team manages to defeat all adversaries without receiving any harm at all. These victories enhance the rewards received from the battle, reflecting the initial expected compensation plus an additional boost. Typically, this is achieved by ensuring the enemies don’t get a chance to take action, but even if an enemy misses their attack, it still counts as no damage being taken on your part.

Victories without injury (Unscathed Victories) often come easily against enemies that are weaker than you but still prove tough in regular battle encounters. However, these victories become even simpler when you make use of the various combat mechanics within the game, especially for those who grasp the game’s dynamics and learn optimal strategies to play effectively.

4 New & Changed Status Ailments

  • Some status ailments carry over between battles.

In this updated version of the game, although some ailment names may be familiar from other Atlus games, their functions have been significantly altered. Additionally, there are brand-new ailments that can wreak havoc on any party member, making it essential to either exploit these ailments or swiftly heal affected characters.

In contrast to past titles, all status conditions this time are uniquely designed, even those that appear similar. For instance, although burn and poison might seem alike, burn no longer affects continuously; instead, it occurs only when the affected individual is attacked.

3 Synthesis Attacks

  • Unlocks when Hulkenberg joins the party.
  • Turn order or make-up does not affect Synthesis attacks.

Collaborative Assaults refer to situations where two characters join forces to execute a highly potent attack that typically surpasses the power each could manage individually. These joint attacks deplete MP from all participants and require extra Battle Time Icons to be activated, as they involve multiple characters acting simultaneously.

Instead of seeing it as a downside, using several Press Turn icons simultaneously can yield the same number of icons when exploiting a weakness. Be mindful of Mana Point (MP) expenses, as repeatedly utilizing Synthesis skills in quick succession could deplete your party’s MP without you realizing it.

2 The Protagonist Can Be Downed

  • You can still command the party with the Protagonist downed.

In most contemporary Atlus games, when the main character falls, it often leads to a game over. However, in this new version, the protagonist can be knocked down but functions just like any other team member, with no adverse effects from being downed.

When you encounter him in battle, he’s tough to defeat, but his strength grows with every level-up as you get to pick his stat boosts yourself. Plus, it’s nice to not constantly fret about one character getting their weak spot exploited and causing a game over.

1 Any Weapon, Any Character

Metaphor: ReFantazio - 7 Unique Combat Mechanics
  • Equipped Archetype determines the equipped weapon.
  • Each Archetype needs to be summoned for each character.

In a metaphorical sense, ReFantazio empowers gamers by offering an unprecedented level of flexibility when constructing their party. Any character is free to adopt any role, and this freedom extends to weapon selection as well. Essentially, every character can wield any weapon in the game.

Certain figures excel with stats tailored to specific roles, yet they retain the flexibility to perform any action should the need arise. Consequently, the Main Character can wield whatever weapon they choose during battles in the open world.
