Persona 6 Can Take the Series’ Superbosses to a New Level with One Change

Persona 6 Can Take the Series' Superbosses to a New Level with One Change

As a seasoned veteran of the Persona series, I’ve faced my fair share of challenging battles – from the relentless pursuit of the Reaper to the cunning tactics of previous protagonists. Yet, there’s one battle that has always eluded us fans: the ultimate showdown against the Velvet Room’s enigmatic master, Igor himself!

The “Persona” series is renowned for its tough optional boss fights, such as the relentless Reaper and strategic battles against past heroes. A common aspect of the series is engaging in combat with the game’s Velvet Room Attendants, who often employ powerful Personas and abilities. In an exciting development, “Persona 6” might elevate this “Persona” franchise tradition by letting players fight not only the newest attendant, but also its master, Igor himself.

Velvet Room Attendant Battles Are Notoriously Tricky

GameAttendant(s)Special Rules
Persona 3/Portable/ReloadElizabeth/TheodoreMay not block, repel, or absorb attacks using Personas or items. Frequently fully heals. Battle limit 50 turns. Fought solo.
Persona 3 Portable/Persona 4MargaretMust deal 5000 damage every 10 turns. Attacks twice per turn. Battle limit 50 turns.
Persona 5Caroline & JustineBoth fought at once. Battle consists of series of phases using different attack types.
Persona 5 RoyalLavenzaBattle consists of a series of phases. Ends automatically if each phase is not cleared.

In the game Persona 3, players have been given an opportunity since then to engage in intense, high-level battles with the Velvet Room’s attendant towards the end. It is usually suggested that players engage in this battle only when they’ve reached the highest possible level. Winning these fights usually necessitates having optimized weapons and custom-designed Personas with skills that can counter the Attendant’s. More often than not, a player will have to face the attendants several times to understand their attack patterns, the Personas they employ, and any special rules of the fight.

The Master Of The Velvet Room Remains Unchallenged

Igor has been present in the Velvet Room since the initial installment of the Persona series, and assumed complete control over it following Persona 3 (previously managed by Philemon who remains missing). With expertise in all aspects of Personas, Igor is capable of handling the Compendium, combining Personas, enhancing them, and executing various related duties.

In contrast to his significant influence within the Velvet Room, Igor has never been presented as an optional battle opponent like the attendants in Persona 5. Throughout the game, Yaldabaoth impersonates Igor but is not the true Igor and does not fight like he might. Players have longed to confront Igor since the concept of fighting the Velvet Room attendants was introduced, as he would likely be a challenging boss that demands all players’ knowledge about Personas.

How An Igor Boss Fight Could Work

In the hypothetical scenario of a boss battle in Persona 6, similar to Elizabeth/Theodore, Margaret, the twins, and Lavenza, Igor may present a challenging late-game encounter with unique rules. It’s expected that Igor would employ high-level Personas, especially the Ultimate Personas associated with the Major Arcana. Although it’s impossible to foresee Igor’s exact behavior in battle, potential strategies he might use could include:

  • Using Ultimate Personas that represent the various Attendants he has worked with, such as Empress for Margaret or Strength for Caroline and Justine.
  • Using Personas wielded by previous protagonists, such as Orpheus, Izanagi, and Arsene.
  • Limiting which Personas the player has access to by temporarily altering the Persona Compendium for the duration of the battle.
  • Summoning the Attendants to heal or support him in battle.

Beyond Igor, an additional formidable challenge might be Philemon, the initial overseer of the Velvet Room who has been absent since the game “Persona 2 Eternal Punishment.” Philemon is often speculated to have created or initiated the Persona system, and his expertise in battling with Personas could surpass even Igor’s. As an alternative, players may face off against Nameless, Belladonna, and the Demon Painter – the unengaged Attendants from “Persona 2” – as well as any new Attendant or Attendants that “Persona 6” is likely to present.
