Kakashi Hatake is a key character in the Naruto series, best known as the leader of Team 7. Throughout the story, he mentored Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, guiding them until the very end. After the Fourth Great Ninja War, Kakashi’s importance grew when he became the Sixth Hokage, leading the Hidden Leaf Village through a difficult period of rebuilding.
After Kakashi, Naruto Uzumaki took over as the leader, and since then, Kakashi has become less prominent in the Boruto series. Despite being a fan favorite, he doesn’t appear much, and there’s likely a reason for this. It’s possible he’ll have a significant role to play later in the story, and his importance to the overall franchise remains strong, hinting at a potential major development for his character.
Kakashi Hatake Is Still An Active Shinobi In The Boruto Era
Despite Retirement, Kakashi Is A Konoha Shinobi
Kakashi Hatake was a naturally gifted ninja who dedicated many years to serving Konoha. He’s on track to potentially become the village’s longest-serving ninja ever. Kakashi became Hokage in his thirties and held the position for roughly ten years. After Naruto Uzumaki became the Seventh Hokage, Kakashi chose to retire and live a peaceful life. However, he remains an active ninja of Konoha, which isn’t surprising to his fans.
I’ve noticed a pattern with the Hokage after they step down – they don’t just retire completely. They remain active shinobi, ready to help the village when needed. We saw it with Hiruzen Sarutobi; even after naming Minato as the next Hokage, he continued to participate and lead, especially during the Nine-Tails attack. I expect the same from Kakashi Hatake. He may not be Hokage right now, but he still lives in Konoha and is incredibly powerful. He’s one of the strongest ninja we have, and I’m sure he’ll step up and take action whenever the village needs him to.
It’s puzzling why Kakashi hasn’t played a bigger role in the Boruto series. He’s still relatively young and should be at the peak of his powers. Given his strength, he’d be a huge asset in fights against powerful enemies like the Otsutsuki and Shinju. This lack of involvement is confusing, but it becomes clearer when you consider the current challenges facing the village.
Kakashi Could Return If Shikamaru Is Dismissed As Hokage
Ikemoto and Kishimoto Could’ve Saved Kakashi For A Special Role
Okay, so things are really tough in Konoha right now in Boruto. It’s been three years since everyone thought Naruto died, and the village is still reeling – it’s just not the same. Shikamaru’s doing his best as acting Hokage, trying to keep everything from falling apart, but he’s not the Hokage, you know? His face isn’t on the mountain with the others, and he’s purposely avoiding taking the position permanently. The reason? He knows Naruto is actually still alive, and he’s waiting for him to return!
The essence of a shinobi is teamwork! — Kakashi Hatake
Shikamaru is patiently awaiting Naruto’s return, but the village of Konoha can’t afford to wait. Konoha has been facing difficulties for the last three years, and it’s time they selected a new Hokage. To make matters worse, Shikamaru’s hidden alliance with Boruto Uzumaki and Kashin Koji is at risk of being revealed. He’s already under suspicion from people like Kobu, as well as his own allies, Ino and Sai.

If Konoha decides to remove Shikamaru as the acting Hokage, they’ll need to choose someone new. Ideally, this person would share Shikamaru’s vision, and Kakashi would be a natural fit for the role.
The Boruto series would benefit greatly from having Kakashi Hatake take on a leadership role in Konoha. His return would provide much-needed stability and allow the village to effectively address new threats like the Shinju and remnants of Kara. Plus, as a fan-favorite character from the original Naruto series, his presence would generate excitement and boost the show’s popularity.
Kakashi’s Strength Is Needed To Help Konoha
Honestly, I think it would be totally logical for Kakashi to become the next Hokage! We’ve seen this happen before in the original Naruto series. Remember when the Fourth Hokage passed away? The Third Hokage stepped back in because it just wasn’t the right time to pick a new leader. I think the Boruto series could easily do the same thing – bring Kakashi back to lead while they figure things out, instead of rushing to name an Eighth Hokage right away. It would feel really natural and fit the story perfectly, in my opinion!
You will be the Sixth Hokage, Kakashi! — Obito Uchiha
Considering Naruto is still alive and Shikamaru knows it, bringing back Kakashi makes a lot of sense. If Naruto continues as Hokage, Kakashi could return as an advisor – a role better suited for Shikamaru than being Hokage himself. Until Naruto returns, Konoha needs Kakashi’s strength and leadership. Plus, fans are eager to see Kakashi back in the story. His character arc feels incomplete, and the Boruto series could provide a satisfying conclusion if the creators choose to do so.
Kakashi is a popular character with a lot of untapped story potential, and both Mikio Ikemoto and Ukyo Kodachi have hinted at his return in the manga. Fans are really hoping to see him reappear in the story soon.
Boruto can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
