Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Change Has Fans Worried

The digital storefront pages for Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen no longer mention compatibility with Pokémon Home. This change has worried fans, but past releases suggest these games may still receive the feature in a future update.

Remakes of the original Pokemon games, originally released on Game Boy Advance, are launching on February 27th for $19.99 each on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Nintendo is releasing these games as part of the 30th anniversary celebration for the Pokemon series. Unfortunately, they won’t be added to the Nintendo Switch Online library. However, the games will soon be compatible with Pokemon Home, which will finally allow players to transfer their original Pokemon to newer games and devices – a feature fans have been requesting for a long time.

Nintendo Pulls Pokemon Home Mentions from FireRed and LeafGreen eShop Pages

Nintendo quickly removed a promise about Pokemon Home connectivity just hours after revealing Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. This led some fans to worry that the feature might not be included in the updated games. However, it’s also possible Nintendo is simply prioritizing promoting features available right when the games launch, and will add Pokemon Home support later. They had initially said it was “coming soon” before removing that statement.

We should get official details about what this change means on February 27th during the 30th anniversary Pokemon Presents event, which starts at 6 a.m. Pacific Time. While the 25-minute show might not center around Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, it’s a good chance for The Pokemon Company to explain how Pokemon Home will work with the new games.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen May Not Be Fully Beatable Without Pokemon Home

Moving creatures between games has always been a key part of the Pokemon series, and usually, newer games can connect with older ones. However, the Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Pokemon games broke this pattern. While technically part of the third generation, they can hold many more creatures than previous games. To complete the full Pokedex in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, you originally needed to trade with other Generation 3 titles. Since Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald aren’t currently planned for the Switch, Pokemon Home looks like the simplest way to finish the Pokedex in the new Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen, if it’s available at launch. Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness also allowed trading with the GBA games and are coming to Switch through the Nintendo Switch Online service, but it’s currently unknown if they will support Pokemon Home.

Pokemon transfer services, like Pokemon Bank and Home, haven’t always been available right when new games launch. They usually get added a little later. A good example is with the Sword and Shield games on Switch, which came out in November 2019 but didn’t get Pokemon Home support until February 2020. This happened again with the 2022 update to the transfer app – Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, and Legends: Arceus all received Home support around the same time, months after their initial releases.

While the original FireRed and LeafGreen games from 2004 can technically connect to Pokemon Home, it’s a very complicated process. Currently, you can’t transfer Pokemon from those Game Boy Advance titles to the Switch directly. Instead, you first need to send them to Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum on the Nintendo DS. From there, they must go to Pokemon Black, White, Black 2, or White 2, then to Pokemon Bank on the 3DS, and finally to Pokemon Home.
