In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the weak Pokémon Magikarp can evolve into the incredibly strong Gyarados. But, it takes a lot of effort to level up Magikarp enough for it to evolve.
Want to evolve your Magikarp into a Gyarados fast? This guide shows you exactly where to find Magikarp and the quickest ways to get it to evolve. Read on for all the details!
How to Get Magikarp in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
The two fastest ways to get Magikarp in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Magikarp Salesman: An NPC in Route 4’s Pokemon Center sells a Magikarp for ¥500. This Pokemon Center is located right next to the entrance to Mt. Moon.
- Old Rod: You can get Old Rod in Vermillion City by talking to the Fisherman in the house right next to the Pokemon Center. Use Old Rod on any body of water in the game, and you’ll find a Magikarp immediately.
If you fish for Magikarp with a Good Rod – which you can get in Fuchsia City – you might find one at level 15 that already knows the Tackle move. This can help you train it up more quickly.
The Magikarp you get from the Magikarp Salesman has the usual 1 in 8192 chance of being a shiny Pokémon. If you want to try for a shiny one, you can use the soft reset method: save the game right before you receive the Magikarp, and then reset and try again if it’s not shiny.
How to Evolve Magikarp into Gyarados in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
In the Pokémon games FireRed and LeafGreen, Magikarp evolves into Gyarados at level 20. If you purchase a Magikarp from the Magikarp Salesman or catch one with an Old Rod, it starts at level 5. Because Magikarp can’t learn any battle moves until level 15, you’ll need to find other ways to help it gain experience and level up. Here are three options to do that:
- Switch Training: Lead battles with the Magikarp, and switch to another Pokemon immediately. If you win, Magikarp will get half of the experience.
- Day Care: Leave Magikarp with the Day Care NPC on Route 5 for automatic experience gain.
- Exp. Share: Capture 50 different species of Pokemon and talk to the Professor Oak’s Aide in the Lookout Station in Route 15 to obtain the Experience Share. Give Exp. Share to Magikarp to hold, and it will get half of the experience from every battle when it is in the party.
