Marathon Devs Share Details Regarding Networking and Security Ahead of Server Slam

Bungie, the developer known for games like Destiny 2 and Halo, has shared details about how it will ensure a fair and enjoyable experience in its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. They’re focusing on dedicated servers, improved networking, and a strict anti-cheat policy. Marathon aims to compete with games like Escape From Tarkov and ARC Raiders, and players can try it out for free this week in a special ‘Server Slam’ test.

Bungie first announced Marathon, a remake of the classic 1990s first-person shooter, in 2023, with plans to release it in 2025. However, after a limited test play, the game received mostly negative feedback, so Bungie decided to postpone the release to make significant improvements. They’ve been working on things like AI behavior, combat balance, and adding new features like nearby voice chat. Now, with the game launching in just over a week, Bungie is sharing details about its online systems and security measures.

Marathon Reveals Networking Plans And Anti-Cheat Measures

Bungie recently shared details about the technology behind their upcoming shooter, Marathon. In a blog post on February 23rd, they explained that the game will use dedicated servers to reliably handle important actions like combat and collecting items, making it harder to cheat. They’re also implementing a new networking system to make the game feel smooth and responsive, and a ‘Fog of War’ system. This system limits what players can see on the map, reducing the advantage gained from cheats like wall hacks and those that reveal loot locations.

Bungie has completely overhauled its game security, adding a new system alongside the anti-cheat software, BattlEye. They’ve made it clear that anyone caught cheating in Marathon will be permanently banned – there will be no second chances. Players have been requesting this type of strict policy for a while, especially after learning that ARC Raiders uses a three-strike system, allowing cheaters to return to the game after a suspension.

Regarding network issues in Marathon, the developers have confirmed that players who disconnect during a run will be able to reconnect and continue playing. If a reconnection fails because of a problem with Bungie’s servers, the team will try to give all affected players back their starting gear. However, this won’t happen if the disconnection is caused by a player’s own internet connection or computer issues – in those cases, gear will not be returned.

Just before the final test phase for Marathon begins, some important details have been revealed. Although the game officially releases on March 5th, players can try it out for free on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC from February 26th to March 2nd.
