Sony Patents System That May Finally Solve Multiplayer Game Pausing Issues

Sony has developed a new system, detailed in a recent patent, that aims to eliminate interruptions during online multiplayer games. Sony regularly patents improvements to PlayStation, enhancing the gaming experience and offering hints about future console features and updates.

Sony is starting 2026 with several new PlayStation patents, each offering innovative features. One patent reimagines PlayStation controllers, replacing buttons and joysticks with touchscreens and sensors that track finger movements. Another explores using AI to create podcasts with news and updates tailored to gamers. Additionally, Sony has patented a system that could eliminate pausing issues in multiplayer games, offering a smoother online experience.

Sony’s New Patent Could Soft-Pause Multiplayer Games

Sony recently patented a new feature, discovered by Respawn Index, that lets games pause in a unique way. Instead of completely stopping, the game continues to run, but at a lower intensity. This “soft pause” aims to make the game more accessible during breaks by subtly easing difficulty, reducing sound, and generally making gameplay less demanding. Players will be able to activate this feature through various methods, such as pressing a dedicated button.

Sony has patented an AI-powered version of its “soft pause” feature. The idea is that if you get a notification while gaming, the system would automatically and briefly pause the game, letting you handle the notification without interrupting your gameplay. While Sony hasn’t announced when this feature will be available, it could potentially appear in the next major PlayStation console, currently anticipated to be the PlayStation 6.

Multiplayer games have become incredibly popular recently, with many offering ongoing, live experiences where players connect globally. A common frustration with these games is the inability to pause – stopping mid-match often leads to immediate consequences, like being eliminated in a game like Fortnite. Unlike single-player games, you can’t simply stop and resume where you left off. Players have long requested a solution, and it appears Sony is now addressing this issue.

A new Sony patent could allow players to pause online games without being disconnected or ruining the experience for others. This would be especially helpful in team-based shooters where having a player drop out can significantly impact the game. While patents aren’t always finalized – Sony could decide not to implement this – it’s still a promising sign that PlayStation is working on ways to enhance gameplay and make things more convenient for players.
