Daniel Radcliffe Doesn’t Want His Son to Know He’s Harry Potter — Yet

Daniel Radcliffe is best known for playing Harry Potter throughout the hugely popular film series, and people still ask him about it even though the last movie came out 15 years ago. Since then, he’s focused on stage work, appearing in plays like Equus, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and The Cripple of Inishmaan. He’s also been in several other films, including the horror movie The Woman in Black and the mystery Kill Your Darlings. In 2022, he surprised audiences by playing musician Weird Al Yankovic in the biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Currently, Radcliffe is performing in Every Brilliant Thing, a one-man show on Broadway at the Hudson Theater, running for 13 weeks starting March 13th.

Daniel Radcliffe has been a public figure for most of his life, starting with his role in the BBC’s adaptation of David Copperfield alongside Maggie Smith when he was just 10 years old – even before Harry Potter made him famous. Having grown up in the public eye, Radcliffe is thoughtful about how he’ll share his acting career with his young son. He and his partner, Erin Darke, whom he met on the set of Kill Your Darlings in 2012, welcomed their son in April 2023. Radcliffe recently discussed the joys of parenthood and his plans for eventually telling his son about his iconic role as Harry Potter.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Daniel Radcliffe shared that he’s currently focused on enjoying his role as a father for as long as he can.

As long as I can simply be his father, and he doesn’t see me as anything more, I’ll continue to cherish that role.

Daniel Radcliffe generally keeps his personal life private, including the name of his son. But in a recent interview with the New York Times, he revealed a heartwarming part of being a dad: he loves reading Dr. Seuss to his son. He’s particularly fond of One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish because he appreciates its playful chaos, and even noticed how Dr. Seuss abandoned an early theme in the book. He also shared that the The Hat trilogy by Jon Klassen is another favorite.

The New York Times also asked Daniel Radcliffe about the actors he looked up to when he was starting out. He spoke fondly of working with stars like Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in Harry Potter, and Steve Buscemi, his co-star on Miracle Workers.

After finishing the ‘Harry Potter’ films, I realized I was incredibly lucky. I was in a rare position for an actor my age – I could choose projects solely because I enjoyed them and thought they’d be fun. I’ve always admired actors like Gary Oldman and Steve Buscemi, both of whom I’ve had the chance to work with. They appear in all sorts of movies, and that’s what I aspire to – a career where you’re clearly having a good time.

Daniel Radcliffe is bringing the same dedication to his new play, Every Brilliant Thing. He had planned to take some time off from Broadway, but the script was so compelling he decided he had to be a part of it.
