Mankey is a Fighting-type Pokémon first seen in the original Pokémon Red and Blue games (known as Green in Japan). In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, you can find Mankey relatively early in the game, shortly after defeating the first gym leader, Brock. This guide will tell you where to find Mankey and how to evolve it into its next form, Primeape.

What Level Does Mankey Evolve into Primeape in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?
You can find Mankey’s location in the next section. Just so you know, it evolves into Primeape at level 28 in FireRed and LeafGreen. You can level it up by battling with other Pokémon or by using Rare Candies.
Fortunately, you won’t need to level it up a lot or search for a special stone to evolve it, unlike with Pokémon like Pikachu.
When Mankey reaches level 28, it should learn the move Rage, which increases its attack power when hit by an opponent and also deals 20 damage. After evolving into Primeape, it will learn four additional moves as it levels up: Seismic Toss at level 36, Cross Chop at level 45, Screech at level 54, and Thrash at level 63.
Where to Find Mankey in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
You can find Mankey in a few different areas, but Route 22, west of Viridian City, is the most common place to encounter one.
After leaving Pallet Town, this will be your first big stop. You can find a Mankey on Route 23, but you’ll need to earn all eight gym badges and be ready to challenge the Pokémon League before you can get there.
Besides Route 22, you can also find a Mankey on Route 3 and Route 4, just east of Pewter City.
You’ll earn your first Gym Badge in this city by defeating Brock. After that, you can go right to reach Route 3, which leads to Mt. Moon. Inside Mt. Moon, you’ll need to choose between the Helix and Dome Fossils. Once you leave Mt. Moon, you’ll be back on Route 4, where you can explore a new patch of grass.

Mankey can also be found on the first floor of the Rock Tunnel. You can reach this tunnel from Route 10 (east of Cerulean City via Route 9) or from north of Lavender Town.
If you’re hoping to catch a Primeape without evolving a Mankey, you’re in luck! I’ve found them appearing in a few different places. You can find them on Route 23, and if you’re exploring the Cerulean Cave, check out the first floor. Also, once you’ve gotten all eight gym badges and can access Victory Road, Primeape sometimes shows up on the second floor there.
