As a long-time Xbox fan, I’m honestly a little worried about the future of the brand. Seamus Blackley, one of the original creators of the Xbox, is saying things might be really tough ahead with the new CEO, Asha Sharma. Over the past few years, Xbox has been going through a lot of changes – we’ve seen layoffs, prices going up on both the consoles and Game Pass, and even some of their biggest games like Halo, Forza, and Gears of War being released on PlayStation and Nintendo. It’s gotten to the point where Microsoft actually had to confirm they’re still planning a new Xbox console, because rumors were flying that it was canceled!
Xbox is undergoing significant changes at the top, with Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, announcing his retirement after nearly 30 years with the company. Spencer started at Microsoft as an intern in 1998 and played a key role in shaping Xbox, successfully navigating the challenging launch of the Xbox One and leading the purchase of prominent gaming companies like Bethesda and Activision. In addition to Spencer’s departure, Xbox president Sarah Bond is also leaving. Asha Sharma, president of Microsoft’s CoreAI, will take over as CEO, but a replacement for Bond hasn’t been announced yet.
Original Xbox Creator Believes New CEO Will Sunset the Xbox Brand
Seamus Blackley, a former designer of the original Xbox, recently told GamesBeat that he expects Microsoft to eventually discontinue the Xbox brand under its new CEO, Asha Sharma. Blackley has observed Microsoft ending projects that don’t directly support its CoreAI work, and he thinks Xbox will be among them. Given Sharma’s background as a senior AI executive at Microsoft, Blackley predicts she’ll oversee a gradual phasing out of the Xbox, describing her role as someone who will ‘gently let Xbox fade away.’

Blackley’s forecast differs from what CEO Sharma has publicly stated about Xbox. Since becoming CEO, Sharma has consistently emphasized her dedication to the Xbox brand and maintaining it as a console, and she’s even addressed fan desires for more exclusive Xbox games.
It’s too soon to know how well Sharma will do as the new CEO of Xbox, and some recent comments might be jumping the gun. She definitely has a challenge ahead of her: rebuilding the Xbox brand and regaining the confidence of gamers who have been disappointed by Microsoft’s recent choices. Some players have already noted that Sharma doesn’t have as extensive a gaming background as her predecessor, Spencer, who was a dedicated gamer with a high Gamerscore.
Many customers are currently very skeptical of Xbox, and it appears morale isn’t much better within the company itself. Employees were reportedly upset with the recent “This is an Xbox” ad campaign, which highlighted the various devices Xbox games are available on. Considering all the challenges Xbox has faced, this sudden change in leadership is raising questions, and it remains to be seen if Sharma can address concerns and restore confidence in the Xbox brand.
